Komurohama Beach (also known as Okitsu Beach) is a breathtaking coastal destination located in Shimanto Town, Kochi Prefecture. It holds the prestigious title of being one of the '100 Best Water Bathing Beaches' selected by the Ministry of the Environment. The greatest charm of this area lies in its incredibly calm waves and shallow seabed. Because the water remains shallow for a long distance from the shore, it is an exceptionally safe environment for families traveling with small children. The area is beloved by locals and visitors alike as a place to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with pristine nature.
Situated near the mouth of the Shimanto River, this region has long been celebrated as a scenic area rich in natural beauty. The Shimanto River is famously known as 'Japan's last clear stream,' and the surrounding ecosystem is strictly protected to preserve its purity. The coastline of Komurohama has been maintained through a deep-rooted spirit of environmental conservation, ensuring the landscape remains as beautiful as ever. Furthermore, the area is steeped in local tradition, such as the 'Hiburi-ryo' (fire-fishing) method, allowing visitors to feel the history of a community that has lived in harmony with the sea for generations.
The highlight of Komurohama is undoubtedly its crystal-clear water and the expansive, shallow beach. To ensure visitor safety, a dedicated swimming area is designated within 200 meters of the breakwater on the left side of the beach. This designated zone provides a secure space for swimming and playing in the waves. Beyond swimming, the scenic coastline offers a peaceful environment where you can simply listen to the sound of the waves and rejuvenate your senses. A stroll along the shoreline is also a wonderful way to experience the local landscape.
The peak season for swimming is primarily from June to September. During the summer holidays, the beach becomes a lively and vibrant destination for families. For the best experience, visit during the bright daylight hours when the transparency of the water is most striking, making it perfect for water activities. At sunset, the sky transforms into a beautiful gradient of colors, offering a tranquil atmosphere accompanied by the gentle sound of the tide. Please note that most facilities are unavailable outside the summer operating season, so it is important to check the schedule before your visit.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of leisure activities centered around swimming and beach play. Rental equipment, including beach umbrellas, lifebuoys, and bodyboards, is available, allowing you to enjoy the ocean even if you haven't brought much gear. Additionally, depending on the season, you may have the opportunity to observe traditional local fishing culture, such as the 'Hiburi-ryo' method. This offers a rare chance to witness traditional Japanese maritime culture up close while enjoying the natural environment.
The area around Komurohoma is dotted with spots where you can fully immerse yourself in the nature of the Shimanto River. You can enjoy walks while gazing at the clear river or participate in local nature observation tours. The vicinity also features hot spring facilities and local accommodations, allowing you to enjoy local cuisine and culture after a day at the beach. It is a perfect destination for exploring the unique blend of nature and culture found in Shimanto Town.
To enjoy your time at the beach, please prepare swimwear, a change of clothes, towels, and sunscreen. While rental items are available, please bring your own gear if you prefer specific equipment. Sturdy sandals or water shoes are highly recommended for walking along the shore.
