Komoro Joshi Kaikoen is a beautifully preserved historical park located in Komoro City, Nagano Prefecture. Built upon the site of an Edo-period castle, the park serves as both a peaceful retreat for locals and a significant historical landmark for visitors. The landscape features the structural remains of the former castle fortifications, harmonizing historical architecture with lush, seasonal nature. The scenery changes dramatically throughout the year, with breathtaking cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn foliage in the fall. Additionally, the park is a versatile destination for all ages, as it houses a zoo and a children's amusement park, making it an ideal spot for families.
This site marks the former stronghold of the Komoro Clan. In 1880, former samurai of the Komoro domain acquired the land from the San-no-mon gate to the Honmaru (inner citadel) site. Later, in 1926, under the guidance of Seiroku Honda, the area was expanded and developed into a public park to preserve and showcase its natural and historical beauty. It stands as a vital cultural heritage site that preserves the legacy of the former castle town of Komoro. The surrounding area also retains much of its history, including the historic streets of the Hokkoku Kaido post station and the former Komoro Honjin, which is designated as a National Important Cultural Property, allowing visitors to deeply understand the region's heritage.
The park is dotted with various historical remains. Visitors can observe stone walls (ishigaki) and topographical features that once served as defensive structures of the castle. The botanical beauty is another major draw; the park is transformed by the pink hues of cherry blossoms in spring and the brilliant colors of maple leaves in autumn. While maintaining its historical atmosphere, the park is well-equipped with facilities that make it easy for families to enjoy. Because the scenery changes with the seasons, the experience varies depending on when you visit. Spring (March–April) is the peak season for cherry blossoms, bathing the park in soft colors. During the daytime, the sunlight highlights the textures of the plants and the historical stone structures, making it a perfect time for photography and nature observation.
