Located in Achi Village, Nagano Prefecture, "Komatsunagi no Sakura" is a single, majestic cherry tree with an estimated age of 400 years. This tree is not just a beautiful natural landmark; it is deeply connected to the historical legend of the samurai Minamoto no Yoshitsune. During the spring, a phenomenon known as "water mirror" occurs, where the cherry blossoms are perfectly reflected in the surrounding rice paddies. This mirror-like reflection creates a breathtaking view that captivates visitors from around the world.
The tree is steeped in the legends of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a famous figure in Japanese history. According to local lore, the name "Komatsunagi" (meaning to tie down a horse) comes from the story of Yoshitsune stopping here and securing his horse's legs. This connection between historical narrative and the natural landscape has allowed the local community to cherish and protect this tree as a vital piece of their cultural heritage.
The primary attraction is the massive, solitary tree standing proudly beside the rice fields. Preparation for the weather is essential. Temperatures tend to drop significantly during the nighttime illuminations, so we highly recommend bringing a warm jacket or coat. Since the area near the rice paddies may have unpaved paths or muddy ground, comfortable walking shoes are advised. As this is a natural site, please follow local etiquette: carry your trash home with you and do not disturb the surrounding plants or trees.
