Komata Gorge (Komata-kyo) is a designated Natural Monument located in Akita Prefecture, celebrated for its spectacular landscape of deep valleys, numerous waterfalls, and unique geological formations. The experience begins with a scenic boat ride from Ohira Lake, which brings you to the entrance of a well-maintained hiking trail where you can witness the raw power of nature up close.

The undisputed highlight of Komata Gorge is the Sankai Falls, a powerful waterfall standing approximately 20 meters high. This breathtaking sight is located at the end of a roughly 1.8km hiking trail starting from the boat landing. Along the way, visitors can also enjoy exploring other notable spots such as Yokotaki Falls, Magari Falls, and the serene Gamafuchi, each offering a different perspective of the gorge's diverse character.
The best time to visit Komata Gorge is from April to October. Each season offers a different charm, from the fresh greenery of spring to the vibrant colors of autumn. Please note that sightseeing boat operations and the availability of the hiking trails can change depending on weather conditions and water levels. Since the route involves hiking through a gorge, please wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing. The water levels in the valleys near Mt. Moriyoshi can rise quickly due to weather changes; always check the local weather forecast and water levels before heading out.
