The Imperial Palace has served as the residence of successive Emperors since the Meiji era. While located in the heart of Tokyo, the vast grounds feature majestic palaces, the Imperial Household Agency buildings, and historic moats and stone walls. Unlike the East Garden, which is open to the general public, the Special Tour is an exclusive program that requires advance reservations. This program allows you to experience the historical background, dignified architecture, and lush natural landscapes that symbolize the spirit of Japan up close.
The grounds of the Imperial Palace occupy much of the former Edo Castle, which was developed by Tokugawa Ieyasu in the 17th century. From the early 1700s until the Meiji Emperor moved from Kyoto in 1868, Edo Castle served as the center of administration and life for the Tokugawa Shogunate for over 260 years. Today, the site remains a vital cultural heritage, where visitors can still see the traces of the Edo period through its moats, earthen walls, stone fortifications, turrets, and gates, telling the story of Japan's historical evolution.
The Special Tour follows a route through historical buildings and gardens. Key highlights include the palace area, the East Garden of the palace, and several significant structures. Notable landmarks such as the Fujimi-yagura and Fushimi-yagura turrets, the former Privy Council building, and the Imperial Household Agency buildings are set against a beautiful landscape. Additionally, the scenic waterfronts like the Hasuike Pond, along with the historic stone walls and gates, offer a unique glimpse into the architectural techniques and traditional Japanese aesthetics of the past.
The appearance of the Imperial Palace changes beautifully with the seasons. The months of May, July, and August are particularly wonderful for enjoying the lush greenery and seasonal flora. However, please note that the tour route is approximately 2.2 km long and includes areas with very little shade. It is important to prepare according to the weather. Tours are typically organized into morning and afternoon sessions, so visitors often prefer the relatively cooler morning hours or the afternoon sessions.
This Special Tour is more than just sightseeing; it is an immersive program where you walk through a sacred historical space. As you traverse the 2.2 km course, you will observe the palace buildings, historical stone walls, and the surrounding moats. Because the tour is strictly managed through a reservation system (online, mail, or at the window) to limit the number of participants, you can enjoy a calm and respectful atmosphere while experiencing traditional Japanese spaces.
The area surrounding the Imperial Palace is highly accessible and surrounded by major Tokyo stations and commercial hubs. It is a short walk from Nijubmae Station (Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line), Otemachi Station (Tokyo Metro Mita Line), and JR Tokyo Station. Many hotels and restaurants are located nearby, making it easy to visit between other sightseeing activities. Please note that while there are parking areas near the Imperial Palace Outer Garden, vehicle access to the inner palace grounds is restricted, so using public transportation is highly recommended.
Preparation is essential for this tour. First, you MUST present an original form of photo ID (such as a driver's license, My Number card, or student ID) at the reception desk. Copies are not accepted. Second, as the 2.2 km course involves walking through areas with little shade, please wear comfortable walking shoes and prepare for the weather (sun protection). Third, a security check of your belongings will be conducted, so please keep your luggage to a minimum. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Finally, please use public transportation as parking and bicycle parking are not permitted inside the palace grounds.
