The former JNR Kurayoshi Line was a national railway line that once connected Kurayoshi Station in Tottori Prefecture to Yamamori Station in Sekigane, spanning approximately 20 kilometers. The line was decommissioned at the end of March 1985. Although more than 40 years have passed since its closure, certain sections still preserve the original rails and station platforms, making it a rare and significant site for railway enthusiasts. The area around the former Taikuji Station is particularly striking, where the railway ruins are seamlessly integrated into lush bamboo groves, creating a hauntingly beautiful and unique landscape.
This railway line once served as a vital transportation artery for the local community. At the site of the former Taikuji Station, you can observe the station platforms and tracks up close. Another highlight is the area near the Yamamori Tunnel, where the landscape demonstrates the seamless blend of railway architecture and natural vegetation. Please note that access to the interior of the Yamomori Tunnel is restricted and is generally only available through specific guided tours or special events.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring, the surrounding cherry blossoms create a picturesque view. From summer to autumn, the lush green bamboo groves provide a refreshing environment for walking and nature photography. However, please be aware that during the winter months (December to February), the tourist information center near the Taikuji Station site may be closed, and access to certain sections may be restricted due to snow or icy conditions.
The Sekigane Abandoned Railway Sightseeing Information Center is located near the tracks, offering railway dioramas and photo exhibitions. You can also purchase local specialties, snacks, and original railway-themed merchandise here. For those wishing to explore a wider area, rental bicycles are available. Additionally, the area hosts special events such as the "Former JNR Kurayoshi Line Trekking Tour" and "Walking Open Days," which allow participants to explore unique areas like the interior of the tunnels under professional guidance.
The area around the abandoned tracks features the Kurayoshi Hakuba White-Walled Storehouse district, famous for its historic architecture. The nearby Sekigane Onsen area also allows visitors to experience local culture alongside the history of the railway. The information center is located about a 15-minute walk from the Taikuji Station site, serving as an excellent base for your exploration.
Comfortable walking shoes and casual clothing are highly recommended for exploring the natural paths. Since you will be walking in a natural environment, please prepare for changing weather and temperatures. When visiting the information center, it is wise to check if they accept credit cards or IC cards, as cash is often preferred for small purchases. If you plan to join a tour to see the tunnels, advance reservations are required. Please respect the environment by carrying out all trash and following local etiquette to preserve the site.
