Takino Suzuran Hillside Park, located in Minami-ku, Sapporo, is the only national government-run park in Hokkaido. Situated approximately 20km from central Sapporo, it offers an easy escape into vast, beautiful landscapes. The park is characterized by two distinct seasons: the 'Green Season' centered around summer and the 'White Season' centered around winter, each offering a completely different way to enjoy the outdoors. It is a place where nature, recreation, and cultural experiences blend seamlessly into a grand space unique to Hokkaido.
The park was developed to preserve the natural environment while providing a premier space for public recreation. Designed to highlight Hokkaido's rich natural assets, the 'Country Garden' area expresses a pastoral landscape themed around 'Life with Flowers and Greenery in the North.' Beyond being a simple park, it serves an important role as a place to learn about coexistence with nature and the changing seasons.
The park is divided into four major zones: the Stream Zone, the Central Zone, the Takino-no-mori Zone (East Area), and the Takino-no-mori Zone (West Area), each offering unique charms. In the Country Garden, you can witness tens of thousands of crocuses and tulips from spring to early summer, followed by the blooming of the park's symbol, the Lily-of-the-Valley (Suzuran), in June. The Stream Zone allows visitors to enjoy playing in the river and listening to the soothing sounds of nature. Additionally, the park features extensive stay-based recreation facilities, including campsites, auto-resorts, and BBQ areas.
The park's appearance changes dramatically depending on the season. In spring (late April to May), you can enjoy the awakening of nature with blooming tulips, daffodils, and crocuses. In June, the Lily-of-the-Valley blooms, bringing a refreshing early summer breeze. Summer is the perfect time for active outdoor pursuits like water play, BBQ, and camping. In winter, the park transforms into the 'White Season,' offering recreation amidst beautiful snowscapes. Some seasonal events, such as stargazing sessions, may also be held at night, so it is recommended to check the event schedule before visiting.
A variety of physical activities are available to help you connect with nature. You can enjoy playground equipment, obstacle courses, and water play areas, or explore the vast grounds using rental bicycles. For a more immersive experience, the park offers overnight stays at campsites or auto-resorts, as well as BBQ and fishing. Special programs, such as Nordic walking tours and stargazing sessions, are also held periodically to deepen your understanding of the natural environment.
Near Takino Suzuran Hillside Park, you can find other recreational spots like Sapporo Artistic Forest and Sapporo Fureai-no-mori. Visiting these areas together allows for a fulfilling sightseeing and leisure experience in the southern Sapporo region. This entire area, blessed with abundant nature, is the perfect destination for travelers looking to refresh their minds and bodies away from daily life.
Because the park is extremely large and includes unpaved paths or slopes, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please prepare clothing appropriate for the season (such as a change of clothes for water play in summer, or heavy winter gear for the cold). If you plan to use the camping or BBQ facilities, please check the required equipment in advance. Regarding payments, while many facilities accept credit cards and transit IC cards, it is always wise to carry some cash.
