The Aviation Science Museum is located within Skypark Shibayama in Shibayama Town, Chiba Prefecture. Opened in August 1989, the museum is a comprehensive facility designed to foster an understanding of aviation concepts. The establishment of the museum was rooted in the development of Narita Airport, following requests from the local Shibayama community to the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism). Its mission is to contribute to the advancement of Japanese aviation technology by promoting scientific literacy regarding flight. For many years, the museum has played a vital role in conveying both the history and the future of aviation to visitors from Japan and around the world.

Inside the museum, a diverse range of exhibits allows visitors to learn the mechanics of flight. You can examine the internal structures of engines and cross-sections of fuselages and wings through detailed, large-scale displays. A major highlight is the interactive content, including the flight experience using a Boeing 747 model and professional-grade simulators modified from pilot training equipment. The outdoor exhibition area features approximately 20 aircraft, providing a rare opportunity to see real planes at eye level, including some models that visitors may be able to enter.
The museum is open from 10:00 to 17:00, a perfect time to enjoy the dynamic views of Narita Airport. While observing aircraft in the outdoor exhibition area is subject to weather conditions, clear days offer excellent visibility of aircraft movements around the airport. The museum remains open daily throughout August, making it an ideal destination for families during the summer holidays. Please note that the museum is closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a national holiday), so we recommend checking the official calendar before your visit.
