The Kokonoe "Yume" Suspension Bridge, located in Kokonoe Town, Oita Prefecture, is a pedestrian-only suspension bridge with a length of 390m, a height of 173m, and a width of 1.5m. Opened in 2006, the bridge is designed to harmonize beautifully with the surrounding rich natural environment. Below your feet, the primeval forests of the Naruko Gorge—a tributary of the Chikugo River—unfold, offering a sense of profound connection to nature.
This facility was developed as a key tourism hub to showcase the region's exceptional natural landscapes. The area is home to waterfalls selected as part of the "Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan" and features ancient geological formations. The structure was built to balance the protection of this precious natural heritage with the enjoyment of visitors, providing an open space that respects the environment.
From the bridge, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view. The sight of the powerful Ootaki and Megami waterfalls crashing nearby is truly captivating. In the distance, the majestic Kuju Mountain Range, including Mount Mitamata and Mount Kunaisai, dominates the skyline, changing its appearance with every season. The vibrant greenery of the forest below and the shifting colors of the seasons are among the greatest draws of this location.
The scenery changes dramatically depending on the season. From spring to summer, the lush greenery of the Naruko Gorge and the refreshing spray of the waterfalls are particularly striking. In autumn, the surrounding foliage turns into a brilliant display of color. In winter, the air is crisp, offering clear views of the Kuju Mountains. Operating hours vary by season:
Walking across this pedestrian-only bridge offers a thrilling sense of adventure. Because the bridge is only 1.5m wide, the walk becomes an intimate, special experience that allows you to feel completely immersed in the wilderness. Information can also be gathered at the local tourist information center.
The area is dotted with other beautiful natural spots like the Kuryo Gorge and Kuyo-kei Gorge. It is also easily accessible from famous hot spring destinations like Yufuin Onsen and Beppu Onsen, making it easy to plan a trip that combines nature exploration with relaxing hot spring stays.
As this is a natural environment, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Parking is available at two locations: the Nakamura side (229 standard cars, 37 large buses, 6 disabled spaces) and the Northern side (46 standard cars, 2 disabled spaces). Please note that large buses cannot park at the Northern side. Since temperatures can fluctuate significantly depending on the weather and season, please bring clothing that allows for easy layering. While the path is well-maintained, sturdy footwear is best for safety on the suspension bridge.
