Kaminogami Shrine is a significant spiritual site located in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Recognized as a "Japan Heritage" site, it is celebrated for its historical architectural styles, natural beauty, and its role as a symbol of local history. The shrine grounds feature a sacred pond (shinchi) that creates a serene atmosphere, harmonizing perfectly with the surrounding lush greenery. Furthermore, this site holds deep historical weight as a location connected to the Satsuma Rebellion; visitors can still see bullet marks on the shrine buildings, serving as a physical testament to the intense battles of that era.
The current shrine building was constructed in 1628 (Kanei 5) by Sagara Nagatome. The architectural style and the exquisite carvings on the walls heavily reflect the aesthetics of the Momoyama period. The shrine is open year-round, making it an ideal place for a peaceful stroll through nature during the day. A particularly special event occurs on the night of November 25th, leading up to the annual festival on November 26th, when the "Yagura Kagura" (Night Kagura) is performed. This traditional ritual dance takes place in a mystical atmosphere that is entirely different from the daytime, illuminated by the darkness of the night. The Night Kagura is typically held from 19:00 to 20:45, offering a spectacular and ethereal experience.
Visitors can experience the dynamic and traditional Japanese ritual known as "Kagura." Specifically, on the night of November 25th, the Kuma Kagura is performed, featuring powerful and rhythmic dance movements. There are also opportunities to deeply engage with this traditional culture through various cultural programs.
