Koiwai Farm, located in Shizukuishi Town, Iwate Prefecture, is a historic large-scale farm founded in 1891 (Meiji 24). Spanning an expansive area of approximately 3,000 hectares, the farm manages diverse operations including dairy farming, forestry, environmental greening, tourism, and food production. With over 130 years of history, the farm embodies the theme of "coexistence between humans and the environment," having transformed wild lands into lush, green pastures. It stands as a symbol of the evolution of modern Japanese agriculture.
The farm preserves numerous structures built from the Meiji era through the early Showa era, many of which are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. Specifically, 21 facilities—including the main office, No. 1 and No. 2 warehouses, the equestrian stable, the club, and barns/silos (No. 1 through No. 4)—are registered as cultural assets. These buildings are highly valuable for understanding the history of modern Japanese architecture and agriculture. Additionally, the "Oinomori" forest within the farm is a site mentioned in the fairy tales of Kenji Miyazawa and is designated as a National Scenic Spot. Thus, Koiwai Farm is not just a tourist destination, but a living historical record of the technology and culture that supported Japan's modernization.
The farm offers a variety of spots where historical architecture meets natural beauty. The architectural complex, including the barns and the main office designated as National Important Cultural Properties, serves as a precious relic of past construction techniques. Visitors can also see the Edohigan Single Cherry Blossom tree, which changes its appearance with the seasons; this tree was historically planted to protect cattle from the sun. The vast landscape allows visitors to feel the rich natural environment of Iwate Prefecture up close.
Koiwai Farm offers different charms throughout the seasons. From spring to summer, the lush green pastures are perfect for outdoor activities. The blooming period of the Edohigan cherry blossom and the refreshing summer scenery are particularly popular for photography. In autumn, the landscape shifts with the changing colors, while in winter, you can experience the serene, snow-covered farm. The farm is generally open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM; visiting during daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the details of the historical buildings and the vast scenery.
