Koiwa Shobu-en is a lush, stroll-style garden located along the Edogawa riverbank in Edogawa Ward, Tokyo. This historic site was developed by the Edogawa City administration, built upon a foundation of Japanese irises (Hanashobu) donated by local residents. The garden features a vast iris field covering approximately 4,900 square meters, where about 50,000 irises bloom in splendor from May to June each year. Known as an "urban oasis," the sight of the colorful blossoms spreading across the landscape offers a mesmerizing escape from the hectic pace of Tokyo life.
The origins of this garden are deeply rooted in the affection of the local community. The current beautiful landscape was shaped by the donation of iris plants by local citizens, a tradition that has been preserved over generations. This garden is more than just a public park; it is a symbol of Edogawa Ward, representing a harmonious coexistence between the local community and the natural environment. The culture of nurturing these irises has been passed down, maintaining the area's rich natural heritage.

The greatest draw is undoubtedly the 50,000 Japanese irises that bloom simultaneously in early summer. A diverse palette of colors—including purple, white, and pink—adds a stunning touch to the riverbank scenery. In addition to the irises, various wild grasses and plants grow around the iris fields, allowing visitors to enjoy the changing expressions of nature throughout the season. Walking through the expansive grounds to observe the flowers swaying in the breeze is a quintessential experience of this location.
The best time to visit Koiwa Shobu-en is from May to June. This period marks the peak blooming season when the colors are at their most intense and spectacular. Specifically, during the "Koiwa Shobu-en Matsuri" (Koiwa Iris Festival) held from early to mid-June, the atmosphere becomes even more lively and festive. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours, when the bright sunlight makes the vivid colors of the flowers stand out most clearly.

The garden is designed as a stroll-style garden, allowing you to wander through nature and observe seasonal flora at your own pace. Walking through the vast iris fields provides a perfect opportunity to refresh your mind and body away from daily life. During the June festival period, you may also encounter local events that allow you to feel the local culture and the rhythm of nature more deeply.
Since Koiwa Shobu-en is situated on the Edogawa riverbank, the surrounding area offers wide, open spaces. After your stroll, you can enjoy a relaxing time or a meal in the nearby area, benefiting from the peaceful atmosphere of this nature-rich riverside district.
As the garden is located in a natural environment, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since temperatures can rise during the blooming season, it is wise to bring a hat and stay hydrated to prevent heatstroke.
