Koganzaki is a scenic cape located in Nishiizu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, facing Suruga Bay. Its most striking feature is the rock face that glows a brilliant golden color when bathed by the setting sun. The geological formation of these cliffs is composed of propylite—a type of rock created by the alteration of volcanic materials through hydrothermal processes—which has been designated as a Shizuoka Prefecture Natural Monument. Furthermore, Koganzaki is renowned as one of the few locations in West Izu where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Mount Fuji rising directly above the sea horizon.
The unique landscape here was shaped by intense volcanic and geothermal activity. On March 18, 1988, the "Koganzaki Propylite" was officially designated as a natural monument due to its significant academic and aesthetic value. Historically, stones quarried from this area were even used in the construction of Sunpu Castle. The area also holds literary significance, with a monument dedicated to the famous author Yukio Mishima located near the cape, marking a place where nature and literature intersect.
Koganzaki offers a variety of natural wonders. During sunset, the rock face literally turns a shimmering gold, creating a mystical atmosphere alongside the sea. Visitors can also spot unique rock formations, such as a stone that resembles a horse's head. The area is developed as "Koganzaki Park," which includes walking paths, grassy lawns, and observation decks. To the north, the Koganzaki Beach offers a 100-meter stretch of sandy shore with exceptionally clear water, perfect for exploring the shoreline.
Koganzaki is most spectacular during the late afternoon. The moment the sun dips toward the horizon and the cliffs glow most intensely is the quintessential Koganzaki experience. During the summer months (July to August), the area becomes a popular destination for swimming and snorkeling. While the park is open year-round, visiting during the summer season allows you to enjoy the lively atmosphere of a seaside resort alongside the transparent, high-quality ocean water.
You can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the park's walking paths while observing the dramatic contrast between the steep cliffs and the ocean. At the beach, visitors can enjoy water activities in the clear sea or explore the rocky shore. From the observation decks, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Mount Fuji, the Izu Islands, and the vast expanse of Suruga Bay.
The area around Koganzaki is a lush, natural part of West Izu, featuring beautiful coastal driving routes. The surrounding coastline is dotted with various hot spring facilities (onsen) and scenic viewpoints. There are also several accommodations and restaurants along the coast where you can enjoy meals while overlooking the ocean.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the paths and observation decks. If you plan to swim, please bring swimwear and sandals. Regarding payment, we recommend carrying cash, as it may be required for local parking or nearby facilities. While English signage is limited, please observe basic etiquette to protect the natural environment, such as not touching the natural monuments and taking all trash home with you.
