Koganzaki Furofushi Onsen is a unique, single-owner hot spring inn situated along the coastline of Fukaura Town, Nishitsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture. The greatest draw is the reddish-brown open-air bath designed to feel as though it is part of the shoreline itself. The space, where the unique color of the water—caused by the oxidation of iron-rich minerals—blends seamlessly with the vast expanse of the Sea of Japan, offers an unforgettable sensory experience. The history of this area involves a long-standing relationship with the sea. While hot springs originally emerged sparingly along the coast, the current form of the facility developed following a successful borehole survey 200 meters underground in 1970, which led to the natural eruption of the hot spring. Since then, it has become a destination for hot spring enthusiasts. Today, as a single-owner inn standing against the waves, it preserves the local culture of enjoying both the sea and the healing waters.
The most iconic feature is the open-air bath set upon the coastal rocks. The facility includes a gourd-shaped mixed-gender bath and an oval-shaped women-only bath, both of which provide a dynamic view of the Sea of Japan. Watching the sun sink below the horizon is a quintessential experience here. Additionally, the indoor large public baths offer elevated views of the sea, allowing guests to witness the changing expressions of the ocean depending on the season and time of day.
The hot spring is available from sunrise to sunset. The most highly recommended time to visit is during sunset. Watching the sky turn deep orange and melt into the sea while soaking in the water is the signature experience of this inn. You can enjoy different facets of the Sea of Japan throughout the year: the sea is relatively calm and pleasant in the summer, while the winter months bring powerful, dramatic waves and a more intense atmosphere.
Beyond simple bathing, guests can experience a deep connection with nature. Soaking in the iron-rich, dark brownish water while listening to the sound of the waves allows you to feel the direct energy of the earth. For those staying overnight, the inn offers a culinary experience featuring fresh seafood from the nearby Maehama fishing grounds.
