Koganei Park is a massive green space spanning the cities of Koganei, Kodaira, Nishitokyo, and Musashino in Tokyo. It is widely celebrated as a premier cherry blossom destination, offering breathtaking seasonal scenery throughout the year. The park is home to various unique attractions, including a historic Steam Locomotive (SL) display and the 'Wanpaku Hiroba' (Energetic Playground), which is packed with equipment for children. It is a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike to enjoy walking, cycling, and relaxing with family in a natural setting.
The park has long been a cherished part of the community, maintaining a rich natural environment. A highlight of its cultural heritage is the static display of a classic steam locomotive (JNR Class C57 No. 186 and JNR Class Suhafu 32 Passenger Car No. 2146), which allows visitors to experience a piece of Japan's railway history. Additionally, the park's northern area is closely connected to the natural landscape of the upper reaches of the Shakuji River, preserving the local ecosystem.
There are numerous spots to explore within the park. At the SL Display area, you can get an up-close look at the historic steam engine. For families, the Wanpaku Hiroba offers an incredible range of activities, including large slides, obstacle courses, mazes, spinning slides, Tarzan ropes, and sandpits. For those seeking more active engagement, the park also features basketball courts, a skateboarding area, a dog run, and the Eucalyptus Plaza for barbecues.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. The most iconic time to visit is in early April during the 'Koganei Sakura Festival' to witness the cherry blossoms in full bloom. If you are interested in the steam locomotive, please note that the SL display is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays between March and November.
With its vast-scale terrain, many activities are possible. You can enjoy cycling, use the bicycle testing area, or try out the skateboarding and basketball facilities. If you wish to host a barbecue, designated areas are available (reservation required). There is also a dedicated dog run for pet owners (registration required).
The area surrounding the park is a blend of residential neighborhoods and cultural landmarks, such as the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum. The park is easily accessible via public transportation, with bus services available from nearby stations.
Please note that the park operates on a 'carry-in, carry-out' trash policy; all waste must be taken home with you. If you are playing musical instruments, please be mindful of volume to respect neighbors and other visitors. Bicycles and scooters are strictly prohibited from being ridden or pushed through certain paths. Additionally, tennis wall-hitting is not allowed. For those using the dog run, please ensure you have completed the necessary registration at the service center.
