Kozen-ji is a prominent head temple of the Tendai sect located in Ako, Komagane City, Nagano Prefecture. Known by its mountain name Hoshakusan and temple name Mudoin, it has long been a center of local faith as one of the five great temples of the Shinno Tendai sect. Situated at the foot of the Central Alps, the temple grounds are dotted with historic buildings and gardens that change beautifully with each season, inviting visitors into a space of profound tranquility and peace.
The history of Kozen-ji is incredibly ancient, dating back to the year 860 when the monk Honjo, a disciple of Jikaku Daishi, received an image of Fudo Myoo from the Kurokawa Falls. Throughout the centuries, the temple enjoyed the patronage of powerful warlords such as the Takeda and Oda clans. During the Edo period, it reached a high level of prestige, receiving land grants from the Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Today, more than ten historic halls and structures remain, serving as a testament to its former glory. The temple is also deeply connected to the 'Hayataro Legend,' a 700-year-old tale that remains a vital part of the local cultural identity.
The primary charm of Kozen-ji lies in the seamless harmony between its historic architecture and the surrounding nature. A significant site is the grave of the 'Sacred Dog Hayataro' located beside the main hall, which serves as a symbol of the area's history and legend.
