Koenji Awa Odori is a premier summer festival held in the Koenji area of Suginami, Tokyo. The event takes place over two days on the last Saturday and Sunday of August, transforming the shopping streets around Koenji and Shin-Koenji Stations, as well as Konan-dori, into a massive stage. Boasting a scale second only to the authentic Awa Odori in Tokushima Prefecture, the sight of numerous dance troupes parading through the streets is truly breathtaking. As a staple of late summer in Tokyo, the festival has grown in popularity and prestige, even attracting professional troupes from Tokushima to participate, creating an incredibly vibrant atmosphere.
The origins of this festival date back to 1957, when it began as the "Koenji Baka Odori" (Koenji Crazy Dance), a community-led initiative to revitalize the local area. Over time, through guidance from practitioners from Tokushima, it evolved into the sophisticated "Awa Odori" style seen today. In 1963, it was officially renamed the "Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori." Through decades of growth in both scale and quality, the event is now managed by the NPO Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori Promotion Association, serving as a vital cultural bridge that connects local traditions to the next generation.
The highlight of the festival is the "Nagashi-odori" (parade dance) that takes over the entire district. Various dance troupes, known as "Ren," perform at several designated stages located around Koenji and Shin-Koenji Stations (including Chuo, Higashi, Junjo, Pal, Momozono, Minami, Look 1, and Look 2 stages). Additionally, more formal "Butai-odori" (stage performances) are held at facilities like Sesion Suginami and Za-Koenji. The combination of the rhythmic sounds of traditional music and the dynamic movements of dancers in colorful, elaborate costumes is guaranteed to captivate any spectator.
The festival is held annually on the last Saturday and Sunday of August. For the best experience, we recommend watching the "Butai-odori" (stage performances) during the morning or afternoon to appreciate the artistic precision of the dance. In the evening and through the night, the "Nagashi-odori" (street parade) offers an incredible sense of unity and excitement as the entire district joins in the celebration. The night performances are particularly beautiful, as the dancers' movements are illuminated by lights, creating a truly spectacular climax to the festival.
As a spectator, you can enjoy the performances freely throughout the streets. Rather than just sitting in a fixed seat, a unique way to experience the festival is to walk through the shopping streets and follow the various "Ren" troupes as they pass by. You can even experience the festival atmosphere at the station itself, where the departure melodies at JR Koenji Station are uniquely arranged to include the sounds of Awa Odori music.
The main venue consists of the shopping streets around Koenji and Shin-Koenji Stations. The area is lined with many restaurants and shops, allowing you to enjoy local food and drinks while soaking in the festival's energy. Cultural facilities such as Sesion Suginami and Za-Koenji also play a key role as venues for the formal stage performances.
Because the festival is extremely crowded, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable clothing and walking shoes. It is also helpful to carry a small bag for drinks or snacks. Please be mindful of your surroundings when using public facilities, stations, or local shops.
