Kochiyama Observatory is a scenic lookout point located in the southern area of Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, offering an expansive view of the Oshima Strait. Situated at a high elevation, the site is characterized by its wide-open, panoramic vistas. On a clear day, visitors can gaze out over the deep blue waters of the Oshima Strait and spot the islands of Kakeromajima and even the distant Tokunoshima. The surrounding lush greenery provides a sense of tranquility, allowing you to immerse yourself in the breathtaking maritime scenery and escape the hustle of daily life.
The area surrounding Mt. Kochi (Kochiyama) has long been recognized as a symbol of the natural environment of Amami Oshima. While the observatory itself serves as a dedicated spot for enjoying the scenery of the Oshima Strait, the region maintains its pristine natural state. The landscape and topography have been preserved, allowing visitors to experience the authentic, untouched beauty of the Amami Islands' rich ecosystem.

The greatest draw is the dynamic and majestic view of the Oshima Strait. From the observatory, you can enjoy the striking contrast between the endless horizon and the vibrant blues of the ocean. The colors of the sea and the silhouettes of the islands change beautifully depending on the weather and the time of day, offering a unique impression with every visit. The exceptional visibility is a major highlight; under the right conditions, the view stretches far across the sea to distant islands.
Kochiyama Observatory can be visited year-round, but it is most spectacular during periods of high visibility and clear weather. The brightest hours of the day are ideal for seeing the most vivid and brilliant shades of blue in the ocean. Additionally, visiting during sunset allows you to witness a stunning color gradient where the sky and sea blend into one. The shifting light throughout the seasons offers a different, beautiful perspective every time you visit.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll through the surrounding nature. To reach the observatory from the parking area, you will walk along a well-maintained path that winds through the forest. This route allows you to feel the fresh air and listen to the sounds of the natural world. Once you reach the top, you can spend a peaceful moment soaking in the scenery. The location is also a popular spot for photography, with the vast ocean providing a spectacular backdrop for your photos.
There are several other spots near Kochiyama Observatory where you can fully enjoy the nature of Amami Oshima. For example, you can visit the beautiful Shinoho Falls or explore the historical sites of the former Imperial Army ammunition depot. This area is also part of a scenic coastal driving route, making it easy to explore the charms of southern Amami Oshima alongside the coastal landscapes and nearby towns.
The path leading to the observatory involves some uneven terrain with inclines and stairs. Because it can become slippery, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and practical clothing. While the path from the parking lot is maintained, please be mindful of your footing as you walk through the natural environment.
