Located in the lush, green environment of Konan City, Kochi, "Kochi Prefectural Noichi Zoo" is designed so that animals can live vibrantly in conditions that closely resemble their natural habitats. The zoo prioritizes a breeding environment that minimizes the use of cages and fences, allowing visitors to witness the animals' natural behaviors and expressions. The vast grounds, integrated with the surrounding nature, are perfect for family picnics or a peaceful stroll for adults wishing to enjoy the changing seasons.
The park is operated as a zoo that leverages the rich natural environment of Kochi Prefecture. Rather than simply displaying animals, the facility focuses on respecting their ecology and maintaining a state close to nature. Visitors can experience the seasonal beauty of birdsong and colorful flora, making it a beloved facility that symbolizes the natural abundance of Kochi.
The zoo features several exhibition areas that replicate various natural environments. For example, in the expansive savanna-style area, you can observe giraffes and zebras relaxing from an observation deck. Other highlights include encounters with red pandas, otters, and impressive penguins. Additionally, the one of the largest tropical rainforest halls in Japan offers an educational and discovery-filled experience where you can observe birds, mammals, and reptiles while feeling the atmosphere of Central and Southeast Asia.
You can enjoy the changing scenery of the seasons throughout the year. Spring and autumn are particularly beautiful, with lovely birdsong and seasonal flowers, making them ideal for walking. To see the animals most active, we recommend visiting in the early morning or during the "Otanoshimi Time" (Fun Time), when keepers provide educational commentary. Please note that animals typically head to their indoor enclosures around 16:10, so an early visit is recommended to see them most active.
Beyond observing natural animal behaviors, you can enjoy a nature walk throughout the grounds. During specific times, the "Otanoshimi Time" allows you to learn more about animal ecology through keeper explanations, such as observing their feeding habits. For families with children, the prairie dog exhibit—where you can look down into their habitat through an underground tunnel—is a very popular attraction.
The park is surrounded by the beautiful natural landscapes characteristic of Kochi. It is easily accessible via the Kochi Expressway (near Nankoku IC) and is only about a 10-minute drive from Kochi Ryoma Airport. The area also features various sightseeing spots and commercial facilities, making it a convenient stop during a trip to Kochi.
As the zoo is vast and located within a natural setting, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable clothing and walking shoes. While bringing your own food and drinks is permitted, eating and drinking inside the buildings is prohibited. Feeding the animals, using drones, or making loud noises is strictly forbidden. For those visiting with small children, stroller rentals (paid) and nursing rooms are available. Please follow the rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone and the animals.
