Kobu-sugi is a legendary natural monument located in Kamikoani Village, Akita Prefecture. It is a natural Akita Sugi (Japanese Cedar) famous for its extraordinarily large burl. The tree is estimated to be between 200 and 300 years old, and the most striking feature is the massive burl on its trunk, which reaches a circumference of up to 6.6 meters. Surrounding this centerpiece are other towering Sugi trees exceeding 40 meters in height, creating a breathtaking landscape of natural-born art. The area is managed as a Natural Observation and Education Forest and a mountain village plaza, offering well-maintained walking paths that allow visitors to observe the history and majesty of these ancient trees up close.
The natural Akita Sugi forests in this area have a rich history. In 1924 (Taisho 13), the area was designated as a natural forest harvesting test site to study the structure and growth of Sugi trees. Since 1988 (Showa 63), it has been officially designated as a Natural Observation and Education Forest to preserve the beauty of the natural Sugi forests and serve as a site for environmental education. The cultural significance of the local Akita Sugi is profound; specimens have been used in various historical contexts, including as exhibits for the National Museum of Nature and Science and even in the construction of the Kyoto Imperial Visit House (Kyoto Geikan).
The main attraction is, of course, the tree that gives the site its name: the "Kobu" (burl) Sugi. The tree possesses extraordinary dimensions, with a trunk diameter of 1.20m, a maximum burl width of 2.2m, and a total circumference of 3.8m (reaching 6.6m at the widest part of the burl). Visitors can also see other impressive trees in the vicinity, including a Sugi reaching 56 meters in height. The site is well-equipped with informative signs, gazebos, and benches, providing a comfortable environment to observe the intricate textures and shapes of nature.
While the natural architecture of the forest can be enjoyed year-round, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. From spring to summer, the forest is a lush, vibrant green. In autumn, the changing colors of the surrounding foliage add a layer of seasonal beauty to the deep green of the Sugi trees. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours, when sunlight filters through the canopy to highlight the intricate details of the massive burl.
The primary activity is forest bathing (Shinrin-yoku) while walking along the well-maintained forest trails (such as the Shinrin-yoku Forest Bathing Path 3). The paths are designed for accessibility with features like handrails and stairs to help navigate the terrain. The presence of gazebos and benches allows visitors to pause and enjoy a moment of quiet reflection amidst the towering trees.
The site is nestled within the rich, untouched nature of Kamikoani Village. The area is filled with informative signage detailing the history of the natural Sugi and provides an immersive environment for nature observation. After your walk, you can relax at the nearby mountain village plaza or designated rest areas to fully soak in the fresh mountain air.
