Kobe Station, located in Midori City, Gunma Prefecture, is a historic railway station on the Watarase Keikoku Railway. The station boasts a rich history dating back to its opening in 1912 (the first year of the Taisho era), and parts of the station building and platforms are designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. The spacious grounds, once used for coupling and uncoupling steam locomotives (C12 type), continue to attract railway enthusiasts and tourists today. The station offers a unique experience where railway culture meets nature, such as dining at "Train Restaurant Seiryu," which utilizes a former express train car, and viewing the seasonal blooming of peach blossoms.
Since its opening in 1912, this station has served as a vital transportation link for the region. Many structures, including the station building, platforms, and even the hazardous materials warehouse, are carefully preserved as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. The wide-open area reflects the era when steam locomotives were a common sight, preserving the history of Japan's modernization. Additionally, the surrounding area is known as the home of the poet Tomihiro Hoshino, adding a rich cultural layer to the landscape.
The greatest charm of Kobe Station is the harmony between its historic architecture and the surrounding nature. The station building and platforms evoke a deep sense of nostalgia. In spring (late March to early April), approximately 300 peach trees (Hanamomo) bloom, painting the station in vibrant colors. Another highlight is "Train Restaurant Seiryu," where you can enjoy a meal inside a repurposed body of a former Tobu Nikko Line express train, offering a nostalgic dining atmosphere. Watching the sightseeing trains (such as the Wasshi-go or Keikoku-go) stop at the station is a quintessential part of the Watarase Keikoku Railway experience.
The best time to visit is early April to witness the stunning peach blossoms in full bloom. This period transforms the station into a beautiful pink landscape. If you are traveling via the Watarase Keikoku Railway sightseeing trains, it is highly recommended to time your visit with the seasonal scenery. Please note that while automatic ticket machines are available during the day, the station is unmanned. It is essential to check the train schedules and machine operating hours in advance.
Beyond simple transportation, Kobe Station offers immersive experiences. You can enjoy a unique meal at the restaurant located in a vintage express car or purchase "Ekiben" (station bento) at the station shop. The station also serves as an excellent starting point for exploring local culture, such as the Kusaki Dam, Tomihiro Art Museum, and the Folklore Hall.
Nearby, you can discover much more of the local culture and nature. The Tomihiro Art Museum showcases the works of the watercolor poet Tomihiro Hoshino, while the Folklore Hall shares local traditions. The Kusaki Dam offers beautiful views of the water, and nearby accommodations like "Sun Lake Kusaki" allow for a relaxing stay amidst nature.
Automatic ticket machines operate from 10:00 to 16:00. Please note that these machines primarily accept cash. If the restaurant is closed, the ticket machine may also be unavailable.
English language support and signage at the station and restaurant are limited. While basic information is available, we recommend using a translation app for smoother communication.
It is highly recommended to check train schedules and operational status in advance, especially if you plan to ride the sightseeing (Torokko) trains or use the station facilities.
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for exploring the station area. For your convenience, coin lockers are available (Large: 400 JPY, Standard: 300 JPY) to store your luggage.
Wheelchair access is possible, but please be aware that there are steps between the train and the platform. It is recommended to travel with an assistant. While Platform 1 (toward Manto) is level, Platform 2 (toward Kiryu) requires the use of a ramp or the station crossing.
