The Kobe Municipal Forest Botanical Garden is a specialized arboretum located in Kita-ku, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. Nestled within the rich natural environment of the Mt. Rokko mountain range, the garden showcases approximately 1,200 species of trees. Each species is planted in a way that closely mimics its original native habitat, providing an authentic look at global forestry. Situated at an altitude of about 440 meters, the garden is part of the Setonaikai National Park area. Its primary appeal lies in the immense diversity of tree species, allowing visitors to witness the distinct characteristics of different plants throughout the seasons.
The facility is designed around a concept of naturalistic planting, focusing heavily on tree-based exhibitions. By dividing the garden into zones that replicate the forests of various parts of the world, the garden serves as a living museum of global natural environments. It plays a vital role in preserving and utilizing the local natural ecosystem through education and conservation.
The garden features diverse areas where trees from all over the world are displayed. In each zone, the planting style is carefully managed to recreate the specific environment where that plant naturally grows, allowing visitors to observe a wide range of botanical forms. The facility also includes the Forest Exhibition Hall, where visitors can learn more about plant life through exhibits and browse the gift shop. Additionally, the grounds feature spacious lawn areas and specialized sections for observing animals, such as Japanese Serow and rabbits.
You can enjoy the changing expressions of the trees throughout the year. Spring (March to May) and Autumn (October to November) are particularly notable times when seasonal changes and plant transitions are most striking. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours between 9:00 and 17:00 (last entry at 16:30) to clearly observe the intricate details and colors of the foliage.
Visitors can engage in tree observation and learn about various natural environments. The Forest Exhibition Hall offers educational displays regarding plant life. For a more relaxed experience, the garden's lawn areas and children's play areas provide a perfect setting to spend time in nature. The garden also offers opportunities to see wildlife, including the Japanese Serow and rabbits, making it a great spot for nature lovers.
The botanical garden is surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of the Mt. Rokko range, including the Saigai Yaman Driveway, Saigai Park, and Dai-ryu-ji Temple, all of which offer a continuous and rich natural environment.
