Kizekkyo is a breathtaking scenic area located in the upper reaches of the Aizu River in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. The most striking feature of this gorge is the countless unique rock formations of various sizes, sculpted over ages by natural erosion. As you follow the flow of the Aizu River, you will encounter a constantly changing landscape. The gorge offers a different face to visitors in every season: the fresh greenery and cherry blossoms of spring, the refreshing sounds of the river in summer, the vibrant colors of autumn foliage, and the serene, quiet atmosphere of winter.
This region has long been celebrated for its natural sculptural beauty. A significant cultural highlight is the "Magai Sanzon Daishibutsu," a massive stone Buddha carved directly into a single giant rock face. This stone Buddha was inspired by the original drawings of the famous painter Insho Domoto, blending artistic value with deep spiritual significance. Furthermore, Kizekkyo is part of the Yoshino-Kumano National Park, a place where nature conservation and cultural heritage exist in perfect harmony.
There are several captivating spots to explore within Kizekkyo. First, past the Takimi Bridge, you will find "Fudo Falls," a place where you can feel the raw energy of nature through the rushing water. As you continue along the hiking trail, you will encounter a massive, overwhelming rock wall standing 16 meters high and 22 meters wide. Carved into this cliff is the exquisite Magai Sanzon Daishibutsu, creating a unique spectacle where natural geological formations and human artistry merge into one.
The ideal time to visit depends on what you wish to experience. Spring (March to May) is beautiful with fresh greenery and cherry blossoms, symbolizing the vitality of nature. Summer (June to August) is a great time to escape the heat by listening to the soothing sounds of the river and waterfalls. Autumn (September to November) is perhaps the most popular season, as the entire gorge is dyed in brilliant hues of red and gold. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to clearly see the intricate details of the rock formations and the stone Buddha.
The primary activity here is hiking and nature walks. After crossing the Takimi Bridge and viewing Fudo Falls, you can follow the mountain path to find a sense of tranquility far from daily life. Looking up at the massive stone Buddha carved into the cliff is a rare and profound experience unique to this location. Taking your time to walk slowly while observing the sculptural beauty of the rocks is the best way to truly appreciate the essence of Kizekkyo.
Kizekkyo is situated within the Yoshino-Kumano National Park area. The surrounding Aizu River basin offers a rich natural environment that is highly attractive to nature lovers. The area is also easily accessible from other major sightseeing spots in Tanabe City and southern Wakayama, making it an excellent destination for road trips or scenic drives.
Since you will be walking through a natural environment, there are uneven paths and stairs. We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, such as sneakers or trekking shoes.
