The Kiyozumi Cosmos Field is a seasonal scenic spot located in Higashi-ku, Kiyozumi, Tanba City, Hyogo Prefecture. This vast area covers approximately 7 hectares and is home to about 5 million cosmos flowers. Originally, this land was farmland located in front of Tatsumi-ji Temple, and the cultivation of these landscape crops began in 1990. Today, the field is managed by the local community association, making it a deeply rooted seasonal tradition of the region.
The history of this area is closely tied to the cultivation of landscape crops. Since the start of cosmos cultivation in 1990, the area has seen significant development, including the discovery of trillium flower colonies nearby in 1992, which helped promote the area as a tourist destination. The land is maintained through a unique community-driven model: the landowner has provided the land for free for over 20 years, while the local community association manages the site, sometimes charging a small fee to cover the costs of purchasing seeds. The cultivation follows a three-year rotation system, which is a characteristic feature of this local tradition.
The field features a wide variety of cosmos varieties, creating a multi-colored tapestry. Visitors can see vibrant shades from varieties such as 'Yellow Campus,' 'Orange Campus,' 'Seashell Mix,' and 'Afternoon White.' Depending on the timing, Red Spider Lilies (Higanbana) may also bloom simultaneously, adding even more color to the landscape. The sight of these flowers stretching along the vast rice paddies is a quintessential symbol of autumn in Tan-ba.
The cosmos field is open only during the blooming season, typically from late September to mid-October. Because the operation relies on funds generated to purchase seeds, the field is only accessible during this specific window. The best time to visit is from early to mid-October. We recommend visiting during bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the vivid colors of the flowers under the sunlight.
Occasionally, local events such as the 'Kiyozumi Cosmos Festival' are held. In the past, these celebrations have featured local specialty sales, food stalls, and traditional activities like 'Mochitsuki' (rice cake pounding). These events are run by a local executive committee and are deeply connected to the community, offering a wonderful way to experience the changing seasons in a natural environment.
The Tanba region offers many other wonderful sightseeing spots. You can easily incorporate a visit to the Kiyozumi Cosmos Field into a larger travel itinerary that includes Osugi Dam Natural Park or other historical sites and local specialty shops found around Tanba-Sasayama and the wider Tanba City area.
As the field is located on agricultural land, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please ensure you visit within the official opening hours. Regarding payments or reservations, please check the local status at the time of your visit. When taking photographs, please do so respectfully and enjoy the scenery without disturbing the environment.
