The Shimizu Maruyama Observatory is located in the Obata district of Shimizu Town, Hokkaido. Situated on Mt. Maruyama, this observatory provides a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view of the Tokachi Plain's agricultural landscapes and the surrounding natural environment. Recognized as one of the 'Four Scenic Views of Shimizu,' the location is famous for its expansive pasture views during the day and its breathtaking, unobstructed starry skies at night.
The area holds a special place in Japanese pop culture, having served as a filming location for the movie 'Silver Spoon' (Gin no Saji) and the popular TV drama 'Natsuzora.' The scenery of the municipal development farm stretching out below the observatory provided the beautiful backdrops for these stories. As part of the Tokachi Scenic Byway (Tokachi Plain/Mountain Foot Route), the area serves as a vital gateway for experiencing the natural beauty of the region.
From the observatory, visitors can enjoy a wide-angle view of the Tokachi Plain's rural landscape and the majestic peaks of the Hidaka Mountains, which are part of a national park. At night, the lack of light pollution allows for an incredible stargazing experience with a 360-degree view of the cosmos. The site features a viewing deck and wooden picnic tables, allowing visitors to relax quietly amidst nature.
During the daytime, the landscape is characterized by the vast, rolling greenery of the pastures, particularly beautiful from May to August. At night, the area is an ideal spot for stargazing due to the clear, dark skies. Please note that access may be restricted or the area may be closed during certain winter periods; it is advisable to check local conditions before visiting.

The observatory is part of the Hokkaido Garden Circuit. Other nearby landmarks include the Nissho Pass Observatory. Access is primarily by car; the most common routes are via the Tokachi-Shimizu Interchange on the Do Grand Highway or by traveling from JR Tokachi-Shimizu Station.
Since the observatory is located in a natural, outdoor environment, temperatures can drop significantly depending on the season and time of day. We strongly recommend bringing warm clothing and proper gear, especially for night-time visits.
