Overview & Charm

Located in Seataka-cho, Miyama City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Kiyomizu-dera is a significant temple of the Tendai sect. Its mountain name is Honkichizan and its temple name is Fumon-in. The temple enshrines the Thousand-Armed Kannon and is recognized as the 16th site of the Kyushu Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage and the 28th site of the Chikugo 33 Kannon pilgrimage. The temple serves as a vital cultural hub for the region, characterized by its many historic structures.

History & Cultural Background

The origins of the temple date back to 806 (the first year of the Daido era) during the early Heian period. According to legend, the monk Saicho (Dengyo Daishi), upon returning from Tang China, was guided to this land by a pheasant. He discovered a sacred Ne-mu (Mimosa) tree here; it is said that Saicho carved two Thousand-Armed Kannon statues from this wood—one for the famous Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto and the other for this temple.

Furthermore, the temple has deep ties to the history of the Yanagawa Clan. Many of its structures were developed during the era of the local lords. In 1745, the current Sanmon (mountain gate) was established through the patronage of Tachibana Sadanori, the sixth lord of the Yanagawa Clan. The temple has long walked hand-in-hand with the local history and the culture of the domain.

Kiyomizu-dera features several structures of immense historical value:

  • *Main Hall and Amida-do**: To the left of the Main Hall, which houses the sacred Thousand-Armed Kannon, sits the Amida-do hall.
  • *Sanmon (Mountain Gate)**: A historic two-story wooden gate built in 1745. It is currently roofed with copper plates and showcases the pinnacle of architectural techniques from that era.
  • *Nio-mon (Guardian Gate)**: Built in 1746, this gate houses the Nio statues that serve as protectors of the Buddhist law. The statues stand approximately 2.4 meters tall, exuding a powerful, historic presence.
  • *Three-Story Pagoda**: A designated cultural property of Fukuoka Prefecture, completed in 1836.

Seasonal Recommendations

You can enjoy different charms throughout the seasons. A particularly significant event is the "Dai-goma Fire Ritual" held from the morning of August 9th to the 10th. Visiting during this time is believed to bring great spiritual merit, and the atmosphere is filled with vibrant energy from many devotees.
