Kitanowaki Beach is a breathtaking coastal area located in Nakabayashi-cho, Anan City, Tokushima Prefecture. Recognized as one of the "100 Best Beaches in Japan," this area faces the Kii Channel and is blessed with a rich natural environment. It attracts about 100,000 visitors every year. The beach is characterized by a wide, shallow shoreline stretching approximately 2km, offering calm waves that make it an incredibly safe and pleasant environment for swimming and water activities. In the past, its landscape was so highly regarded that it was even designated as one of the most beautiful coasts in Japan.
This coastline has long been celebrated as a scenic spot of natural beauty. Since around 1950, local municipalities have developed the area by installing essential leisure facilities such as changing rooms, lifeguard stations, and shower facilities, allowing it to evolve into a well-established beach destination. Following its incorporation into Anan City, the beach has grown into one of the premier seaside destinations in Tokushima Prefecture, drawing crowds from far and wide. The area also maintains deep ties to local culture, with various traditional events occasionally held by local fishermen depending on the season.
The greatest appeal of Kitanowaki Beach is its vast sandy shore and tranquil sea. Because the coastline is very shallow for a long distance, the waves remain gentle, making it a safe haven for beginners and families with small children. Surrounding the beach is a lush pine grove, allowing visitors to feel the breath of nature while relaxing. Depending on the season and weather, you may even catch a glimpse of the distant Ijima islands, offering a beautiful change in scenery and breathtaking views.
The peak season for swimming is typically from July 1st to August 25th. During this period, most leisure facilities and services are fully operational to coincide with the official opening of the beach season. While the daytime is perfect for swimming, the sun can be quite intense, so it is highly recommended to utilize shaded areas or rest spaces. Outside the main summer season, the area may host local traditional events, showcasing a different side of the region's charm. Visiting during the bright summer hours allows you to enjoy the stunning contrast between the clear blue sea and the bright sky.
Visitors primarily come here to enjoy swimming and water play, taking advantage of the shallow, gentle topography. The wide sandy beach is perfect for various leisure activities and simply relaxing in a refreshing atmosphere. Anan City offers many spots where you can experience the rich nature of the region. For instance, the nearby Tachibana Bay is a wonderful spot for scenic drives along the coast. The nearby Nakabayashi Fishing Port also provides a glimpse into the local fishing culture. Additionally, the Anan area features various campsites and parks, allowing you to combine a beach day with other outdoor adventures.
Preparation is key for a comfortable day at the beach. While there are facilities available, please note that some are public (free) and others are private beach huts (paid). It is common to bring items to protect yourself from the sun, such as sunscreen, as well as a change of clothes and towels.
