The Kitaya Family's Shidarezakura is a historic weeping cherry tree located in Kahoku City, Ishikawa Prefecture, with an age exceeding 120 years. The history of this tree dates back to 1895 (Meiji 28), when Zenbei, the 15th generation of the Kitaya family, brought seeds from the famous Kenroku-en Garden in Kanazawa to plant and nurture here. Standing at a height of 13 meters with a trunk circumference of 1.6 meters and a spread of 11 meters, the tree is characterized by its magnificent appearance, where blossoms cascade down like a waterfall. From early to mid-April each year, the sight of pale pink flowers draping from the branches is truly unforgettable.
The history of this cherry tree is deeply rooted in the Meiji era. In 1895, the 15th generation head of the Kitaya family, Zenbei, transported seeds from Kanazawa's representative garden, Kenroku-en, to this location. Over the past 120 years, the tree has been carefully preserved as a symbol of the local landscape. It is a plant deeply connected to the cultural heritage of the Kanazawa region.
The most striking feature is its overwhelming scale and shape. The massive branches reach 13 meters high and extend 11 meters wide. At full bloom, the dense layers of flowers create a visual effect similar to a flowing pink waterfall. Additionally, during certain periods, the tree is illuminated at night, allowing visitors to witness the glowing, ethereal beauty of the cherry blossoms reflecting against the darkness.
