The Kita-Iok川 (Kita-Iokawa) Rice Terraces are a magnificent scenic area located in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture. Spreading across the foothills of Mt. Ogatake (one of Japan's 300 most famous mountains), the landscape showcases a harmonious blend of nature and traditional Japanese rural life. This site holds significant cultural value, having been selected as one of 'Japan's 100 Best Rice Terraces' in 1999, and more recently, as one of the 'Connecting Rice Terrace Heritage' sites in February 2022. The area covers approximately 9.5 hectares with 280 individual terrace steps, descending gently along a slope from 100 to 150 meters above sea level. The surrounding peaks, including Mt. Nagomondake, add to the majestic and tranquil atmosphere.
Agriculture in this region has long been shaped by the natural topography. The rice terraces utilize the abundant water flowing from Mt. Ogatake, playing a vital role in supporting local life for generations. The recognition of this site in both the '100 Best Rice Terraces' and the 'Connecting Rice Terrace Heritage' lists highlights the immense cultural and aesthetic value of this landscape. This scenery, maintained by local communities through generations of coexistence with nature, stands as a symbol of the traditional Japanese rural landscape.
The appearance of the terraces changes dramatically with the seasons. Visitors are often captivated by the sight of the sky reflecting in the water-filled paddies during the spring and summer, or the lush green growth of the rice plants. The panoramic view is framed by beautiful mountains such as Yagihana (one of Niigata's 100 Best Scenic Spots), the ruins of Takagi Castle, and Mt. Hakamokoshi. Additionally, the area features well-maintained paths like the Beech Forest Path, allowing visitors to enjoy a peaceful stroll through a rich forest environment.
The Kita-Iokawa Rice Terraces offer different charms depending on when you visit. From spring to summer, you can witness the stunning reflections in the water-filled fields and the vibrant greenery of growing rice. In late April, the landscape is particularly special as the blooming Katakuri (dogtooth violet) flowers appear against the backdrop of the remaining snow on Mt. Ogatake. For photography enthusiasts, the bright morning light or the soft, golden light of dusk provides the most beautiful illumination for the terraces.
This area is perfect for those looking to reconnect with nature. Walking through the terraces while breathing in the mountain air is an excellent way to refresh your mind. Beyond sightseeing, the surrounding region offers various outdoor activities such as sky running, fly fishing, and rafting, allowing for a multi-faceted experience of the local natural environment.
There are several spots nearby to enhance your visit. After exploring the terraces, you can relax at local hot spring facilities like Yagihana Onsen or Shimoda Yagibine Onsen. The area also features charming traditional cafe houses, local roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki), and is close to the Snow Peak headquarters, making it easy to plan a comprehensive travel itinerary involving both nature and leisure.
As you will be walking in a natural environment, please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes (such as sneakers). Since this is an outdoor, open area, we recommend bringing rain gear, a hat, and sunscreen to prepare for changing weather and sunlight. Please be mindful that these are active agricultural sites; respect the local farmers by not entering restricted areas and avoiding any disruption to their work. Please carry all trash back with you to preserve the environment.
