Kita-Awaji Earthquake Memorial Park Nojima Fault Preservation Museum was established to preserve the geological changes and lessons learned from the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. The facility features the actual Nojima Fault, which was exposed during the earthquake, alongside various historical documents and records. It offers a unique experience where the raw movement of the Earth's crust meets the human history of disaster and recovery.
This site was developed to preserve and showcase the Nojima Fault, which became visible on the surface during the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. The fault is of immense geological importance and holds status as a natural monument. As a center for passing down the memory of the earthquake to future generations, the facility serves a dual role: documenting the human experience of the disaster and explaining the geological formation and topographical changes of the region.
Inside the facility, visitors can observe the actual exposed sections of the fault line that moved during the earthquake. To enhance the educational experience, 10 tablet terminals are installed throughout the exhibition area. These allow visitors to access detailed information and visual data even when staff are not present, providing a deep understanding of the geological background and the mechanics of the earthquake.
The surrounding park is a beautiful spot for seasonal viewing, particularly for cherry blossom enthusiasts. Around March, the Hikan Sakura (winter-blooming cherry) begins to bloom, followed by the arrival of Yoshino, Oshima, and Yaezakura varieties. You can enjoy a beautiful landscape transition through to early May. Please note that the facility typically closes for approximately one week in late December, so we recommend checking the schedule before your visit.
The facility includes a 'Seminar House' that can be used for lectures by earthquake survivors and experts, as well as for meetings and workshops. This makes the site not just a place for individual sightseeing, but also a functional space for educational programs and specialized learning based on real-world experiences and expertise.
