Kiyosu Castle is renowned as a vital strategic base where the famous Sengoku warlord Oda Nobunaga entered from Nagoya Castle (formerly Nakonosho) to begin his journey toward unifying Japan. The current castle keep is a reinforced concrete reconstruction completed in 1989, designed to replicate the architectural style of the Momoyama period. Inside the castle, visitors can learn about the history of Kiyosu, the daily lives of Sengoku-era samurai, and the policies of Oda Nobunaga through immersive experiences such as diorama theaters and video displays. From the 4th floor of the keep, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the vast Nobi Plain, which is especially stunning on clear days.
The ownership of Kiyosu Castle transitioned through various historical figures, including the Oda clan, the Toyotomi clan, and eventually the Tokugawa clan. The surrounding castle town was once a bustling center of commerce and power. Its historical role shifted significantly in 1610 during the 'Kiyosu-goshi' (the relocation to Nagoya), when Tokugawa Ieyasu moved the seat of power, leading to the construction of Nagoya Castle. Interestingly, materials from Kiyosu Castle were reportedly reused in the building of Nagoya Castle, deeply linking the two sites. Recent archaeological excavations have also uncovered traces of Heian-period settlements and evidence of historical seismic activity, adding layers of historical depth to the site.
The castle keep features extensive exhibits designed to provide a deep understanding of the era. On the 1st floor, you can view pottery from the Kiyosu Asahi ruins, as well as important swords and armor related to the Kiyosu region. The 2nd floor features a diorama theater that brings the history of Kiyosu to life through 3D-like visual storytelling. The 3rd floor focuses on the lifestyle of the Sengoku period and the political strategies of Oda Nobunaga. On the 4th floor, visitors can engage their senses with the 'Matchlock Gun Experience Theater' and the 'Kiyosu Karakuri Telescope.' The large windows offer a wide view of the plains, allowing you to visualize the scale of the former castle town.
Kiyosu Castle offers a different charm in every season. In spring (late March to early April), the cherry blossoms surrounding the castle reach full bloom, and you can enjoy the stunning sight of illuminated cherry blossoms at night. In October, the 'Kiyosu Castle Nobunaga Festival' often features traditional tea ceremonies, offering seasonal cultural experiences. During winter, the area hosts enchanting illuminations and projection mapping on the castle keep, providing a magical atmosphere different from the daytime. On New Year's Day, visitors can even view the first sunrise of the year from the castle keep.
Beyond simple sightseeing, the castle offers interactive activities. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, you can participate in a samurai armor rental experience (additional fee) to dress up as a Sengoku warrior. Additionally, traditional 'Kamishibai' (paper play) storytelling performances are held on weekends and holidays, offering a glimpse into Japanese traditional storytelling. During certain periods, tea ceremonies are also held, providing a rare opportunity to touch upon Japanese tea culture. These activities make history feel much more accessible and personal.
The area around Kiyosu Castle is perfect for a historical stroll. The banks of the Gojo River and Kiyosu Park are popular routes for enjoying seasonal flowers. Furthermore, the castle is located near other iconic Japanese fortresses such as Nagoya Castle, Komaki Castle, Inuyama Castle, and Gifu Castle, allowing you to create a comprehensive historical itinerary. The nearby 'Aichi Asahi Ruins Museum' also provides a deeper dive into the history of the region from ancient to medieval times.
As the castle keep involves stairs and various exhibition areas, comfortable clothing and walking shoes are highly recommended. Please note that cash is the primary method for paying admission fees at the castle keep. For special events like armor rentals or tea ceremonies, it is recommended to check in advance regarding availability and reservations. Photography restrictions may apply in certain exhibition areas, so please be mindful of the signs. Please maintain a quiet and respectful atmosphere to honor the historical site and other visitors.
