Yoshiki-en is a beautiful Japanese garden managed by Nara Prefecture, located in Nara City. The garden is composed of three distinct areas, each offering a unique atmosphere: the Pond Garden, the Moss Garden, and the Tea Flower Garden. The landscape is graced by the Shojukai-ke Residence, a modern Japanese-style building from the Taisho era, and a detached tea house with a thatched roof, creating a deeply historical and scenic environment. Admission to the garden is free, making it an easy and accessible stop for travelers exploring Nara Park.
The history of this site is profound; it is said to have once been the site of Mani-ju-in, a sub-temple of Kofuku-ji Temple. While it became private property during the Meiji era, the current buildings and garden layout were established in 1919 (Taisho 8). After serving as a reception facility for a corporation, it is now owned by Nara Prefecture and open to the public. The Shojukai-ke Residence is particularly significant, having been designated as a Nara Prefecture Tangible Cultural Property in 2011 due to its exquisite Taisho-era modern Japanese architectural style.

You can enjoy different botanical displays throughout the seasons. The Moss Garden and Tea Flower Garden, in particular, change beautifully with the seasons. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to appreciate the vivid colors of the garden and the intricate details of the architecture. As evening approaches, the garden becomes even more tranquil and silent, perfect for a peaceful stroll. Please note that the garden is closed for maintenance from February 24th to February 28th each year.
The garden features a detached tea house where you can experience the essence of Japanese tea ceremony culture. While the tea house is a paid facility, it can be used for specific purposes such as tea gatherings. When using the tea house, services such as the rental of felt mats (mosen) and tea utensils are available. It is a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse yourself in the traditional atmosphere of a Japanese tea space.
Yoshiki-en is situated within the Nara Park area, which includes several UNESCO World Heritage sites. Nearby attractions such as Isuien Garden and the historic Taikichi Irie Former Residence are within walking distance. Visiting these sites together will deepen your understanding of Nara's historical landscapes. The area is also close to the famous Nara Park deer.
While the garden paths are well-maintained, the landscape follows the natural terrain, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
