Kiryu Meijikan is a stunning example of pseudo-Western (Giyofū) architecture located in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture. Originally serving as a medical center and later as a local government office, its historical significance has earned it the designation of an Important Cultural Property. The building itself is a work of art, captivating visitors with its ability to transport them back to the atmosphere of the Meiji era.
The structure was originally built in 1878 in present-day Maebashi as a medical center with an attached medical school. Over the decades, it served various roles, including a village office and a community center following the merger of Kiryu City. In 1976, it was designated as an Important Cultural Property under the name "Former Gunma Prefectural Medical Center." Following careful preservation and restoration, the building was restored to a form close to its original design. Today, it operates as Kiryu Meijikan, a cultural facility that preserves and shares the local history of the region.
Inside the museum, you can find permanent exhibits featuring precious artifacts from the Meiji era, such as vintage pianos and organs, as well as materials related to Western-style architecture of that period. These displays offer a deep look into the lifestyle, culture, and architectural transitions of the time. The greatest draw, however, is the architecture itself; the beautifully restored structure allows you to experience the intricate designs and craftsmanship of the Meiji era up close.
The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the intricate architectural details and the clarity of the exhibits. There are also special periods when the museum is opened for free to the public, such as the Meijikan Anniversary in May, the Shichi-Go-San celebrations in October, and Cultural Property Protection Week in November. Visiting during these special events offers a much deeper cultural experience.
Beyond exploring the exhibits, you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the era while viewing the historical musical instruments. The facility also features a charming tea room where you can relax and enjoy a peaceful moment. On specific 1st, 2nd, and 4th Sundays of the month, live musical performances are held in the tea room, allowing visitors to enjoy history accompanied by beautiful live music.
We recommend exploring the historic streets of Kiryu City alongside your visit to the Meijikan. The area surrounding the museum is dotted with various historical buildings, making it a wonderful place for a stroll to deepen your understanding of the region's rich heritage.
