Kinzaki-gu is a historic shrine located at the foot of the former Kanagasaki Castle site in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture. It enshrines Prince Tsuneura and Prince Kora, and is affectionately known as the 'Shrine of Love' (Koi no Miya) due to a romantic legend surrounding the deities. The shrine grounds are home to approximately 1,000 Yoshino cherry trees, making it a premier destination for cherry blossom viewing in the spring. Situated on the northern side of Mt. Tsutsu, the area is well-maintained as the Kanagasaki Green Space, allowing visitors to enjoy a peaceful pilgrimage amidst lush nature.
The history of this site is deeply rooted in the local landscape, sitting at the base of the former Kanagasaki Castle. The deities, Prince Kora and Prince Tsuneura, are linked to historical events involving Ashikaga Takauji. The shrine was established in 1890 as a Kanpei Chusha (Imperial Shrine) dedicated to Prince Tsuneura, with Prince Kora being enshrined later. The current shrine buildings were completed in 1899. The site holds significant prestige, having hosted visits by Emperor Showa in 1933. The tradition of the 'Hanakawari Festival,' which has been observed since the early 20th century, remains a vital part of the local cultural heritage.
The greatest appeal of Kinzaki-gu is the seasonal transformation of its landscape. In spring, the sight of 1,000 cherry blossoms creating a pink tunnel is truly spectacular. Visitors can stroll along the paths leading toward the summit of Mt. Tsutsu, feeling the solemn atmosphere of the shrine amidst the natural scenery.
