The Kinudate Iwa Great Suspension Bridge is a 140m-long pedestrian suspension bridge suspended 37m above the ground, connecting the Kinugawa Onsen hot spring area with the famous 'Tateiwa' scenic rock. The bridge's greatest appeal is the high-altitude perspective, allowing visitors to look down upon the rushing rapids of the Kinugawa River and the lush mountains surrounding the area. At the end of the bridge stands the massive Tateiwa rock, a natural monument reaching approximately 100m in height, symbolizing the majestic nature of Nikko National Park.
The name 'Tateiwa' (meaning 'Shield Rock') is derived from its shape, which resembles a shield used in ancient battles. This massive rock formation has been a central landmark of the local landscape for centuries. The walking route via the suspension bridge was designed to allow visitors to observe the unique topography and natural beauty of the Kinugawa area closely while preserving the surrounding environment.
There are several points of interest beyond the bridge itself. If you head right after crossing the bridge, a 10-minute walk leads you to the Tateiwa Observatory. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Kinugawa River, the hot spring town below, and the distant mountain ranges including Mt. Keicho. If you head left, a 5-minute walk brings you to the Frugamata Falls, a beautiful spot featuring crystal-clear waters. Additionally, the Tateiwa Kinuhime Shrine is located near the top of the rock, offering a place where nature and spiritual tradition meet.
The Kinudate Iwa Great Suspension Bridge offers a different face to every season. You can witness the fresh greenery in spring, the deep lushness of summer, the vibrant colors of autumn foliage, and the serene snowy landscapes of winter. The changing colors of the mountains in autumn and the bright greens of early summer are particularly striking. Daytime visits are recommended for the clearest views of the river and distant mountains.
Visitors can enjoy more than just the bridge walk; the area is perfect for nature observation. You can experience the changing terrain by walking through the hand-carved tunnel, enjoying the panoramic views from the Tateiwa Observatory, or observing the Frugamata Falls. For those interested in cultural experiences, you can seek a Goshuin (temple/shrine stamp/seal). Please note that Goshuin are currently available at the Kinugawa-Kawaji Onsen Tourist Information Center and the Machi-no-Eki 'Yuing PLAZA Kinu Terrace'.
The bridge is a key part of the Kinugawa Onsen sightseeing route. Nearby attractions include Tobu World Square, a theme park featuring miniature replicas of world landmarks, and the Kinugawa River Cruise for enjoying nature from the water. The area is well-equipped with various restaurants and rest areas, making it easy to stop and relax during your sightseeing.
As this is a natural environment, we highly recommend wearing stable, comfortable walking shoes. Since reaching the shrine, waterfalls, and observatory requires walking and climbing, please dress appropriately for light hiking. To protect the natural environment, please ensure you carry all your trash back with you and refrain from any activities that may harm the local ecosystem.
