Kinchakuda is a nature-rich area located in Hidaka City, Saitama Prefecture. The name is said to derive from its shape, which resembles a small drawstring bag (kinchaku), caused by the dramatic southward meanders of the Komagawa River. The greatest draw is the overwhelming display of color in autumn. During the Red Spider Lily (Manjushage) season, a vast expanse of deep crimson flowers blooms simultaneously, creating a magnificent scene that looks as if a red carpet has been laid across the earth. As one of the largest blooming sites in Japan, it attracts visitors from both within the country and abroad.
The history of this area is ancient. The name "Koma" is linked to the migration of people from the Korean Peninsula in the year 716. While the area was once primarily flat rice paddies, it is believed that the river's natural movement and flooding brought in sediment and bulbs, leading to the massive growth of Red Spider Lilies seen today. During the Showa era, as the area was managed and cleared, this massive cluster of flowers was discovered and widely reported, turning Kinchakuda into a famous national sightseeing spot. Additionally, the "Ai-ai Bridge," a beautiful wooden truss bridge, was completed in 1996, adding further charm to the landscape.
The highlight of Kinchakuda is undoubtedly the Red Spider Lily season. An expansive area of approximately 22 hectares, with a diameter of about 500 meters, becomes completely blanketed in red—a sight found nowhere else. The landscape also changes with the seasons; for instance, you can enjoy yellow rapeseed flowers in the spring. Visitors can feel the essence of Japan's four seasons while gazing at the beautiful flow of the Komagawa River and the unique natural topography.
The best time to visit is during the Red Spider Lily season from September to October. During this time, the bright daylight makes the vivid red colors stand out perfectly, making it an ideal time for photography. At dusk, the way the light hits the flowers changes, creating a dreamy, ethereal atmosphere. Even in other seasons, the riverside scenery and rich natural environment are well worth experiencing.
At Kinchakuda, you can enjoy a relaxing stroll through the vast grounds to admire the seasonal flowers. During the peak autumn season, the area is filled with a lively atmosphere as many tourists gather to soak in the natural beauty. The surrounding area also offers hiking paths and historical sites, allowing you to experience both nature and history simultaneously. A walk with family or friends to witness the changing seasons is a wonderful way to escape daily life.
There are many charming spots near Kinchakuda. These include historical structures such as the Koma Family Residence (a National Important Cultural Property) and Koma Shrine. For those interested in outdoor activities, there are hiking trails leading to Mt. Hiwada (305m), which offers a panoramic view of the Hidaka area. Additionally, modern attractions like Metsaa Village are nearby, offering a diverse range of travel styles.
We strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as you will be traversing a large area. Depending on the season, a hat for sun protection or items to prepare for weather changes may be useful.
