Kinhiki Falls is located in Takima, Miyazu City, Kyoto Prefecture. Standing at approximately 40 meters tall and 20 meters wide, it has been selected as one of the '100 Best Waterfalls in Japan.' The site consists of three distinct falls: the main Kinhiki Falls (comprising the Odaki and Medaki), the Hakuryu Falls, and the Garyu Falls. Because the falls face east, the morning sunlight often creates a spectacular rainbow effect around the water. The structure of the plunge pool is relatively shallow, allowing visitors to approach the base of the falls closely to experience the powerful spray.
Kinhiki Falls was selected as one of the '100 Best Waterfalls in Japan' in 1990. It has long been a beloved destination for local residents and serves as a popular cooling spot during the summer months. The area is dotted with sacred sites that blend nature with spiritual tradition, including Kitamuki Jizo-son, Kinhiki Fudo-son (Fudo-do), and Takima Shrine. Additionally, the falls are part of the Kinki Nature Trail, preserved as a significant cultural and natural landscape for the region.
The greatest attraction is the dynamic, heavy flow of water dropping from a height of 40 meters. The waterfall is divided into two parts: the wider section on the right is called 'Odaki' (Male Falls), and the narrower section on the left is 'Medaki' (Female Falls). This split creates a beautiful visual variety. Because the plunge pool is shallow, you can observe the waterfall from a very close distance while feeling the mist on your skin. The scenery changes beautifully depending on the season and the time of day, especially when light refraction creates rainbows.
While Kinhiki Falls maintains a rich flow of water throughout the year, it is particularly popular during the summer as a refreshing retreat from the heat. The best time to visit is in the morning. Since the waterfall faces east, the morning sun is most likely to hit the water at an angle that produces a vivid rainbow. To witness this beautiful natural phenomenon, we highly recommend planning your visit on a clear morning.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the surrounding natural environment. The path allows you to walk very close to the falls, providing a chance to feel the raw energy of nature. The area is also known for its spiritual atmosphere, where occasional waterfall meditation (takigyo) takes place. With nearby shrines and Buddhist altars, it is a place where you can experience both natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Kinhiki Falls is located southwest of the famous Amanohashidate area. It is easily accessible from the nearby Takima Park in Miyazu City; the walk from the park to the falls takes about 10 minutes (approximately 500 meters) via a scenic trail. You can also reach the area using a rental cycle from 'Michi-no-Eki Umi-no-Kyoto Miyazu,' making it a convenient stop during your sightseeing tour of the Miyazu region.
As the falls are located in a natural environment, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please be careful of your footing when approaching the edge of the water. There is a small 'Maintenance Cooperation Fee' to help preserve the natural site; please ensure you have cash (Japanese Yen) ready for this. Please respect the local shrines, Buddhist sites, and the natural environment during your visit.
