The Kikuya Family Residence is a designated Important Cultural Property located in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was the residence of the Kikuya family, a wealthy merchant family who served as official purveyors to the powerful Mori Clan, and the estate even functioned as a reception hall for high-ranking guests. The architecture preserves the distinct style of the early Edo period, making it one of the oldest surviving large-scale machiya (townhouse) structures of its kind. While the estate spans approximately 2,000 tsubo (6,600 square meters), about one-third is currently open to the public, allowing visitors to view historical artworks, folk tools, and a breathtaking Japanese garden that vividly illustrate the lifestyle of that era.
The Kikuya family held samurai status during the Ouchi clan's rule, but transitioned into influential merchants who contributed significantly to the development of Hagi following the construction of Hagi Castle. Successive heads of the family were deeply involved in local social affairs and served as official purveyors to the Hagi Domain. The estate consists of five buildings, including the main house, which are designated as Important Cultural Properties, serving as vital symbols of Japanese history and culture. The surrounding area is renowned as a castle town that still retains the atmosphere of the Edo period.
Inside the residence, you can admire the historic architecture and the precious materials on display. Each of the five buildings—the Main House (Shuya), Honkura (Main Storehouse), Kinzura (Gold Storehouse), Komekura (Rice Storehouse), and Kamaba (Kitchen)—offers a unique atmosphere, showcasing art, ancient books, and household tools that reflect daily life from centuries ago. The Japanese garden is another highlight, with its seasonal transformations offering a different beauty throughout the year. The Kikuya Family Residence reveals different charms depending on the season. Specifically, from late April to mid-May and from late October to late November, a larger portion of the estate is opened to the public, allowing for a more extensive view of the architecture and gardens. Additionally, during certain periods, the "Night Museum & Night Cafe" is held. During these events, you can enjoy a relaxing cafe time while gazing at the beautifully illuminated Shoin Garden, which evokes the nostalgic atmosphere of the Edo period.
Beyond simple sightseeing, there are plans for a deeper cultural immersion. The "Guided Tour" led by a professional guide offers detailed explanations, including access to the Shintei Garden, which is normally closed to the public. For a truly special experience, the "Tea Ceremony Tour" allows you to enjoy matcha in a traditional room using exquisite Hagi-ware tea bowls. The facility also accepts requests for photo weddings and commemorative photography sessions.
The Kikuya Family Residence is nestled within the beautiful landscape of the Hagi Castle Town. The surrounding area features charming alleys selected as one of the "100 Best Roads in Japan," perfect for a stroll through history. We also recommend using a rental bicycle or a shared cycle to explore other historical sites throughout the castle town.
