Kikuchi Keikoku is a breathtaking valley located in the northern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. The valley features well-maintained walking paths, making it an accessible way to experience the raw beauty of nature. The Kikuchi region has long been supported by the abundant water resources provided by the Kikuchi River. For over 2,000 years, agriculture has been the foundation of the local culture, and the tradition of utilizing these rich water resources continues today. The area surrounding Kikuchi Keikoku is designated as a natural recreation forest, ensuring a careful balance between nature conservation and public enjoyment to preserve the local environment for future generations.
The greatest attraction of Kikuchi Keikoku is the spectacular view created by the clear streams and cascading waterfalls. A particularly magical phenomenon occurs from mid-July to August, when sunlight pierces through the forest canopy to create visible pillars of light (light rays). This is a rare and breathtaking natural event that lucky visitors can witness. The well-maintained trails allow you to observe the flowing water and lush vegetation from a very close and immersive perspective.
The landscape evolves beautifully throughout the year. In spring, you can enjoy fresh greenery and mountain wisteria; in summer, the cool streams and shaded paths provide a refreshing escape from the heat. Autumn brings a vibrant display of colorful foliage, while winter transforms the valley into a serene, silver-white wonderland. For those seeking the famous light rays, visiting during the daytime in mid-summer is highly recommended. Please note that access may vary depending on weather and season, so checking local conditions in advance is advised.
The primary activity here is a peaceful stroll through nature. The established walking paths allow you to feel the crisp air and the rhythm of the water closely. Please be aware that swimming in the river is strictly prohibited, and certain activities near the water are restricted. Additionally, the use of drones requires official government permission.
Near Kikuchi Keikoku, you will find the Kikuchi Visitor Center, a facility that provides local tourism information. Here, you can also find local specialty products and light snacks. The entire Kikuchi area is deeply connected to agriculture, offering a peaceful, rural atmosphere throughout the surrounding landscape.
For a comfortable walk, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. The terrain can be slippery or have slight inclines, so please avoid wearing high heels. To protect the natural environment, please note that pets are not allowed, and the collection of plants/animals, camping, use of open flames, smoking, and drone usage are strictly prohibited. If you are visiting with children, please exercise extra caution near the areas where the water current is strong.
