Located in Nishigo Village, Shirakawa District, Fukushima Prefecture, "Kenkei" is a breathtaking Katsura tree that reaches approximately 35 meters in height and is over 300 years old. The tree is characterized by its unique "twin-trunk" shape, where two massive stems emerge from a single root system, giving it the appearance of a sword. In 2000, it was officially recognized by the Forestry Agency as one of the "Top 100 Great Trees in the Forest," marking it as a significant natural heritage site for the region.
The site is steeped in local folklore. Legend tells of an ancient "Oni" (a demonic spirit or ogre) that once tormented the local people. It is said that the local lord at the time, Matsudaira Sadanobu, used a sword to subdue and seal away the spirit, leading to the tree being named "Kenkei" (Sword Katsura). Because of this historical connection, the tree is not merely a botanical specimen but a symbolic icon of faith and protection for the local community.
The primary focus is the two massive trunks that soar straight toward the sky. The form created over three centuries of growth serves as a powerful visual testament to the vitality of nature. Because the tree stands significantly taller than the surrounding vegetation, its presence is striking and can be easily spotted even from a distance. The changing appearance of the tree through the seasons is a key element of the experience.
While the tree can be observed year-round, the autumn season is particularly beautiful as the surrounding landscape transforms with vibrant colors. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours when the texture of the bark and the structure of the twin trunks are most clearly visible. Traveling by car is the most practical way to explore this region, which features various hot spring facilities and scenic spots. Many roads in the vicinity are lined with seasonal flowers, making it a pleasant destination for a scenic drive.
To protect this natural monument, visitors are strictly asked not to touch the tree or disturb the surrounding vegetation. As this is an outdoor natural site, there are no entrance fees, and viewing is free. Please note that English signage is limited, so it is helpful to check maps or photos in advance. Since some paths may be unpaved, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While there are no fees for the site itself, please carry cash if you plan to use nearby facilities or services.
