Giza Banta is a spectacular natural cliff located in Yaese Town, Shimajiri District, Okinawa. In the local Okinawan dialect, "Banta" refers to a coastal cliff or bluff. This site offers a rare sight where numerous waterfalls flow directly into the sea alongside highly transparent, emerald green waters. While it is not a highly developed tourist facility, this lack of commercialization allows visitors to experience the raw, untouched beauty of Okinawa's unique geological formations.
The term "Banta" is a significant word representing the natural environment of Okinawa. Other famous examples include "Kachi Banta" on Miyagi Island or "Kachimachi Banta" near Cape Henza. At Giza Banta, the landscape is uniquely shaped by the discharge of surplus water from the nearby Keza Dam. This combination of natural topography and man-made water management creates a distinctive and mesmerizing spectacle of cascading water that flows down the cliff face.
There are two primary ways to enjoy the scenery at Giza Banta:
From the top of the cliff, you can enjoy a wide-angle panoramic view of the emerald green ocean and even see through the crystal-clear water to the seabed. As there are no man-made railings or fences, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the harmony between the lush greenery, the blue sky, and the sea.
The most striking feature is the sight of countless waterfalls cascading down the cliff into the ocean. This is a rare sight even within Okinawa. During low tide, it is possible to descend toward the shoreline to see the waterfalls up close. Because the view changes significantly depending on the tide, we highly recommend checking a tide table before your visit.
Giza Banta can be enjoyed year-round, but the scenery is most vibrant when the sun is high and the sky is bright. During these times, the emerald green color of the sea becomes more vivid and the clarity of the falling water is at its peak. Visiting during low tide is highly recommended, as it provides easier access to the base of the cliff for a closer look at the waterfalls.
While there are no paved walkways, you can explore the natural terrain. You can enjoy panoramic photography from the top or experience the power of the waterfalls from below. Please note that the terrain can be uneven and rugged, so it is best to visit with the mindset of exploring a wild, natural landscape.
Near Giza Banta, you can visit the Peace Memorial Park (Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Park), a significant site that commemorates the history of the Battle of Okinawa. It houses the Peace Memorial Hall and the Hall of Remembrance, attracting many visitors from around the world. The site is also located behind The Southern Links Golf Club.
