Keiseki-en is a grand Japanese garden spanning 20,000 square meters, established to commemorate the completion of the Yabakei Dam in 1987. The garden masterfully utilizes water from the dam and tens of thousands of stones to recreate the natural mountain streams of the Yabakei area. The landscape is enriched by approximately 20,000 trees across 50 different species, creating a sophisticated arrangement of ponds, rock formations, and waterfalls. The garden is celebrated for its ever-changing natural colors and the artistic interplay of light and shadow.
The garden was constructed to celebrate the completion of the Yabakei Dam, serving as a symbol of the harmony between human-made water resources and the natural environment. The landscaping techniques used to replicate the topography and flow of the Yabakei region reflect a deep respect for local history and nature. Over the decades, it has been maintained as an iconic landmark of the local landscape.
The garden features a central pond surrounded by intricate rock arrangements, waterfalls, and diverse greenery. A major highlight is the realistic expression of mountain streams through strategic stone placement and the beautiful reflections on the water's surface. Traditional structures such as gazebos (azumaya) and wooden bridges are scattered throughout, adding to the classical aesthetic. During the autumn season, the vibrant colors of the foliage are highlighted by special night-time illuminations, offering a completely different atmosphere than the daytime.
While beautiful in every season, Keiseki-en is particularly famous as a premier spot for autumn foliage. During the autumn season, special night-time illumination events are held, typically from 17:00 to 21:00, where the glowing red leaves reflect beautifully on the surface of the pond. The illumination period usually runs from early November to early December. Other seasons offer their own charms, such as the fresh greenery of spring and the changing hues of summer and winter.
The garden is designed for leisurely strolls along well-maintained paths, allowing visitors to closely observe the textures of the rocks, the movement of the waterfalls, and the variety of plant life. During the illumination period, visitors can experience a magical nocturnal walk through the illuminated landscape. The surrounding area is also excellent for nature-oriented activities, including cycling through the scenic local routes.
The area surrounding Keiseki-en is steeped in the natural beauty of Yabakei. Nearby attractions include the Maple Yabakei Cycling Road, as well as various historic temples and local cultural sites that showcase the rich heritage and natural landscape of the Yabakei region.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for exploring the garden paths. If you plan to visit during the autumn illumination events, please bring warm clothing to protect against the evening chill. As some areas of the garden may be dim at night, a small flashlight can be helpful. Please be mindful of local etiquette: ensure you take all trash home with you and respect the natural environment. While the parking lot is free, it can become crowded on weekends, so please plan your arrival accordingly.
