Keino Matsubara is a nationally designated scenic spot located on the western side of Minamiajio City, Hyogo Prefecture, facing the Harima-nada Sea. A magnificent forest of approximately 50,000 black pine trees stretches about 2.5km north of the Mihara River mouth. This pine forest has been selected as one of the '100 Best White Sand and Green Pine Beaches,' '100 Best Shores of Japan,' and '100 Best Sunsets in Japan.' Additionally, it is recognized by the Ministry of the Environment as one of the '88 Best Swimming Beaches' and 'Top 100 Clear Water Beaches,' ensuring a high-quality natural environment.
The history of this area dates back to the ancient Manyoshu era. The famous poet Kakinomoto no Hitomaro is said to have composed poems about this land, and a monument commemorating his poetry stands north of the Keino Matsubara So National Guest House. During the Edo period, the Tokushima Clan managed the forest to cultivate the pine trees. While the landscape has changed due to land reclamation for food production during WWII, the precious pine forest remains well-preserved. The area was designated as a National Scenic Spot in 1928 and is part of the Seto Inland Sea National Park.
The most striking feature of Keino Matsubara is the vast pine forest along the coastline and the expansive view of the Harima-nada Sea. Because it faces west, it is an ideal spot to watch the sun sink into the ocean or to catch a glimpse of Shodoshima Island on the horizon. Within the forest lies the 'Propose Kaido' (Proposal Path), established in 1997. This path is beautifully decorated with traditional Awaji tiles, adding a unique cultural texture to your walk. To the north, you will find 'Goshiki-hama' (Five-Colored Beach), a local monument known for its unique, multi-colored pebbles.
Activities vary significantly by season. In late July, the area often hosts fireworks displays. During the summer, the area is a popular destination for swimming and camping under the shade of the pine trees. The best time to visit is during the late afternoon/sunset hours, when the golden light illuminates the Harima-nada Sea and the silhouette of Shodoshima, creating a truly magical atmosphere.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of nature-based activities. In the summer, the beach is perfect for swimming, and the adjacent campsite allows for an immersive stay in the forest. You can also take a leisurely stroll along the Propose Kaido to appreciate the local craftsmanship of the Awaji tiles. Whether you are looking for a peaceful retreat or a seasonal outdoor adventure, Keino Matsubara offers a perfect escape.
The area around Keino Matsubara is dotted with spots to experience the natural beauty of Awaji Island. To the north lies Goshiki-hama, where you can see the uniquely colored pebbles. There are also several accommodations and national guest houses nearby, making this a great base for exploring the southern part of the island, including areas like Ohama Coast in Sumoto City.
Preparation depends on your planned activities. If you plan to swim or camp, please bring swimwear, a change of clothes, and leisure gear. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the forest paths. Regarding payments, please note that while some nearby facilities may accept credit cards or IC cards, many smaller shops or local services may require cash. It is best to check in advance. If you plan to use the campsite, advanced reservations are strongly recommended. While some signage may be in English, English-speaking staff availability varies by facility. Please respect the environment by carrying out all your trash and following local conservation rules.
