Located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, Kegon Falls is a magnificent waterfall with a total drop of 97 meters. The sight of the Ojirigawa River flowing from Lake Chuzenji and plunging vertically down the sheer rock face is truly awe-inspiring. The falls were designated as a National Scenic Spot in 1931 and were selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Geological Sites in 2007. With well-developed facilities, including an elevator, visitors can experience the raw power of nature from a very close vantage point.
The name of the falls is said to be derived from the 'Kegonkyo' (Avatamsaka Sutra), a sacred Buddhist scripture. The discovery of the falls is attributed to the monk Shoto Shonin. The surrounding area is dotted with other waterfalls whose names are also linked to Buddhist doctrines, such as Agon Falls, Hoto Falls, Hannya Falls, and Nehan Falls. These are often collectively referred to as the 'Nikko Five Famous Waterfalls,' highlighting the deep historical and religious connection between the area's natural beauty and spiritual traditions.
To fully enjoy Kegon Falls, it is best to view it from multiple perspectives. First, you can use the paid elevator located on the north bank of the valley to descend to the observation deck. From here, you can look up at the waterfall from directly in front of the plunge pool, feeling its immense power. Second, you can enjoy the view from the upper level near the elevator parking area on the north side of the canyon. Third, the Akechidaira Ropeway offers a breathtaking panoramic view. From the Akechidaira Observatory, you can see the entire waterfall alongside the vast expanse of Lake Chuzenji and the majestic Mount Nantai.
The appearance of Kegon Falls changes beautifully with the seasons. Pay close attention to the water volume and the changing colors of the surrounding vegetation to experience the site more deeply. During daylight hours, the contrast between the white cascading water and the dark rock faces is striking, making it an excellent time for photography. On clear days, the view from Akechidaira is particularly stunning, as the blue of Lake Chuzenji harmonizes perfectly with the waterfall landscape.

The area surrounding the falls is home to iconic Nikko landmarks such as Lake Chuzenji and Mount Nantai. If you travel via the Irohazaka Winding Road, you can enjoy the changing scenery of the mountains and flora along the way. Other nearby waterfalls, such as Agon Falls and Hoto Falls, also make this an excellent destination for nature lovers and hikers exploring the natural landscapes of Nikko.
