The Kayanodaira Plateau is a vast volcanic highland stretching from 1,400m to 1,700m in elevation, located in Kizachira Village, Nagano Prefecture. Situated on the northern edge of the Joshin'etsu-Kogen National Park, it covers an area of approximately 1,450 hectares. The most striking feature of this plateau is its ancient beech forest, with trees exceeding 300 years of age. Often described as one of the most beautiful beech forests in Japan, this area maintains a remarkably rich and pristine ecosystem. The plateau is also a treasure trove of alpine plants, offering a landscape that changes beautifully with every season. There are diverse highlights to enjoy depending on when you visit. The ancient beech forest offers a powerful sense of life's vitality regardless of the season. The wetlands, specifically the 'Kita-dobu' and 'Minami-dobu' marshes, are spectacular: look for Lysimachia in the spring and Nikko-kisuge (daylilies) in the summer. Because of the high altitude, the night sky is exceptionally clear, providing an unobstructed view of the stars. Additionally, during the summer, you can witness the quintessential highland scenery with cattle grazing at the Kayanodaira Ranch.
The best time to visit depends on your interests. From late May, the 'Minami-dobu Wetland' is at its peak with beautiful Lysimachia flowers. In early June, the forest is enveloped in the vibrant, fresh greenery of new beech leaves. From early to late July, the Nikko-kisage (daylilies) bloom in abundance in the Kita-dobu wetland. For those interested in trekking or camping, timing your visit with these blooms is highly recommended. Please note that during winter, roads may be closed due to heavy snowfall; always check road accessibility before traveling. The night sky is most spectacular from the lodge or campsite areas.

Located north of Shiga Kogen, the plateau is surrounded by natural wonders. The most common access route is via National Route 403 through the Kiyomizu-shi Forest Road. This area is widely recognized as a 'Recreation Forest' perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.
As this is a high-altitude plateau, be prepared for rapid temperature changes. Bring functional clothing suitable for trekking and essential warm layers for even the summer months.
