The Kawazu Sakura Promenade is a celebrated path located along the Kawazu River in Kawazu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is famous for the Kawazu cherry blossoms, a variety known for blooming earlier than typical cherry blossoms. The path stretches approximately 4km and is lined with about 800 trees. The peak viewing season occurs around February. The striking contrast between the vivid pink of the Kawazu cherry blossoms and the bright yellow of the blooming rapeseed flowers (nanohana) creates a colorful landscape that captivates visitors.
The origin of the Kawazu cherry blossom can be traced back to a tree found near the banks of the Kawazu River near Hoeisen Bridge in Tanaka, Kawazu Town. This area is nestled in a rich natural environment fed by the waters of Mount Amagi. The landscape is carefully maintained to harmonize with the local nature, serving as a cherished destination for people visiting throughout the seasons.
The greatest attraction is the seamless integration of the cherry blossoms with the river scenery. The 4km long path creates a tunnel-like effect of blossoms, making it an ideal location for a relaxing stroll. The color contrast between the pink blossoms and yellow rapeseed flowers is a signature feature. Additionally, during certain periods, the trees are illuminated at night, offering a mystical and different atmosphere compared to the daytime view.
The best time to visit is typically in February. During this month, the Kawazu cherry blossoms are in full bloom along the river. Visitors can enjoy the vibrant contrast of pink and yellow under the bright daylight, or experience the ethereal beauty of the illuminated blossoms in the evening. Because the scenery changes depending on the time of day and weather, each visit offers a unique perspective.
The primary activity is a scenic walk along the riverbank.
