Guide
Kawayu Onsen is a highly unique and dynamic hot spring area located within the Akan-Mashu National Park in Hokkaido. A hot spring river flows through the center of the town, creating an atmosphere where the scent of sulfur and rising steam are part of daily life. The name is believed to be a translation of the Ainu word 'Sesekibetsu,' meaning 'hot river,' and the town truly embodies this powerful natural energy. The highly acidic nature of the water is a standout feature, offering a rare and visceral experience of nature's wonders.
The history of Kawayu Onsen is deeply rooted in the region. While the existence of the hot springs has been known for centuries, the modern era of hospitality traces back to 1904 with the establishment of a Russian-style architectural inn. During the Taisho and early Showa eras, the area saw a surge in visitors due to improved transportation and the designation of the national park. The region also gained cultural recognition in 1953 when the surrounding Lake Kussharo area was used as a filming location for a major motion picture, marking a significant chapter in its tourism development.

The greatest draw of Kawayu Onsen is the hot spring river flowing through the town and the dramatic landscapes surrounding it. A major highlight is Mount Io (Iozan), where you can witness the powerful sight of steam and volcanic gases erupting from the earth. The town also features cultural spots like Kawayu Shrine and a museum dedicated to the legendary 48th Yokozuna, Taiho Koki. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the heated indoor pools or wander through the Tsutsujikehara Natural Trail to experience the seamless blend of hot springs and untouched nature.
Kawayu Onsen is a year-round destination. In summer (June–August), the lush greenery is at its peak, making it perfect for combining outdoor activities with hot spring relaxation near Lake Kussharo. Autumn (September–November) offers a stunning contrast between the white steam of the hot springs and the vibrant colors of the changing leaves. In winter (December–March), enjoying an outdoor bath (rotenburo) amidst the heavy snow is a magical experience, though travelers should be cautious of icy roads and snow accumulation. Even at night, the town offers a serene atmosphere perfect for unwinding.

Beyond just soaking in the water, visitors can engage their senses with the surrounding environment. Enjoy a refreshing dip in the heated indoor pools or take a leisurely stroll through the town to discover local cafes and eateries. Walking along the river while feeling the warmth of the earth or observing the dynamic landscape of Mount Io provides a sense of connection to nature that is hard to find elsewhere. Exploring the local nature trails allows you to feel truly one with the grand wilderness of Hokkaido.
Kawayu Onsen is a vital part of the Akan-Mashu National Park. The beautiful Lake Kussharo is nearby, offering various lakeside activities. The famous 'Lake of the Mist,' Lake Mashu, is also within reasonable distance. For those interested in the local ecosystem, the Kawayu Eco-Museum Center provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the unique environment and wildlife of the region. Exploring these areas will allow you to fully experience the natural splendor of Eastern Hokkaido.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes, especially if you plan to explore the areas around Mount Io or the nature trails, as the terrain can be uneven. Because the hot spring water is highly acidic, we strongly recommend removing all metal jewelry (such as watches or necklaces) to prevent corrosion. As some local facilities may only accept cash, please carry Japanese Yen with you. As a matter of etiquette, please be mindful of noise levels in public areas and respect the natural environment and local residents' privacy.
