Kawashima Castle is a historic mountain castle site located in Kawashima, Yoshogawa City, Tokushima Prefecture. Situated along the scenic Yoshino River, this site was once a vital stronghold known as one of the "Awa Nine Castles." Today, the site has been developed into Kawashima Park, a peaceful public space where visitors can enjoy both historical landscapes and natural beauty. The multi-layered castle tower, characterized by its elegant white plaster walls and black tiled roof, serves as a stunning symbol of traditional Japanese architectural aesthetics.
The history of this area dates back to the Sengoku (Warring States) period. It is said that Kawashima Bei no Shin (also known as Kawashima Koretada), a vassal of the Miyoshi clan, constructed this castle to replace Kamizakura Castle in 1572. Following the entry of Hachisuka Iemasa into the region in 1585, the high-ranking retainer Hayashi Dokan was appointed as the castle warden. However, with the issuance of the "One Castle per Province" order in 1638 during the early Edo period, the site ceased its military functions. It continued to serve as a regional administrative center, housing the magistrate's office for the Tokuna Domain through the Meiji era. In 1981, the castle-style structures were reconstructed in their current form, revitalizing the site as a destination for tourism and recreation.
The most striking feature of Kawashima Castle is the architecture of the castle tower rising above the park. The sharp contrast between the white walls and the black tiles reflects the classic design of traditional Japanese fortifications. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls along the well-maintained walking paths, which allow you to feel the presence of the ancient castle ruins. The lush greenery surrounding the site provides a changing landscape that offers a different charm with every season.
The most highly recommended time to visit is during the spring, specifically from late March to early April. During this period, the area is blanketed in cherry blossoms, creating a breathtaking view where the pink blossoms frame the white castle tower. The contrast of the pale pink flowers against the white walls under a clear blue sky is a photographer's dream. Visiting during the bright daylight hours is ideal for capturing the harmony between the architecture and the surrounding nature.
Currently, the site is primarily used for nature walks and sightseeing. You can explore the terrain of the former mountain castle and observe the intricate details of the reconstructed architecture while walking along the paths. Please note that the restaurant facility that was once located inside the building closed in April 2019; therefore, access to the interior for dining or specialized indoor experiences is currently limited. The park is an excellent place for a relaxing walk or a quiet moment of reflection amidst nature.
The area around Yoshogawa City offers many other historical and natural attractions. You can explore the cultural heritage of Tokushima by visiting sites such as the Tokushima Castle ruins or the Tokushima Castle Museum. The natural environment shaped by the Yoshino River also makes this a great area for scenic drives and exploration, allowing you to create a comprehensive historical and nature-themed itinerary for eastern Tokushima.
As you will be walking along park paths, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, such as sneakers. Please dress appropriately for the season to prepare for weather changes. Since the interior facilities of the castle tower closed in 2019, please check the current status if you intended to visit the interior. While entry to the park is free, please carry cash or a credit card for any nearby food or beverage purchases. As this is a public park, please be mindful of local etiquette and ensure you take all trash with you when leaving.
