Kawahara Castle (Oshiroyama Observatory) is a cultural information center located in Kawaharacho, Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture. The building is designed in the style of a traditional Japanese castle tower (tenshukaku). Each floor features specialized exhibits introducing the nature, history, and culture of the Kawaharacho area. From the terrace on the top floor, visitors can enjoy a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.
The site holds significant historical weight; it is known as a location where troops were stationed during the first battle for Tottori Castle by Hashiba Hideyoshi in 1580. Historically, it is believed to have been built as a fort for the Obushi Yamashiro castle defended by Takeda Takanobu. The area is also steeped in legend, specifically the tale of Yagami-hime from the Kojiki. Archaeological excavations conducted between 1991 and 1992 confirmed the site's historical status as an ancient castle through the discovery of castle walls and moats.
The interior is organized by themes for each floor. The 1st floor serves as an information corner, using large photographic panels to showcase the nature and daily life of Kawaharacho. The 3rd floor features the 'Magical Vision' 3D projection, allowing visitors to experience the legendary story of Yagami-hime, often called Japan's oldest love story. From the top terrace, the view extends far beyond the local area to the Tottori Sand Dunes and the mountain ranges of the Chugoku region.
The area surrounding the castle includes Kawahara Chuo Park, which is home to approximately 800 plum trees, offering beautiful scenery during the plum blossom season. At night, the castle is illuminated by 21 light fixtures, serving as a beautiful landmark for the community. Please note that closing times vary by season: the facility is open until 18:00 during the summer (April–September) and until 17:00 during the winter (October–March).
Visitors can learn about local history and culture through dioramas and digital displays. The 'Magical Vision' 3D projection is a standout experience, providing a visual journey through local legends. The surrounding area also hosts seasonal events that allow visitors to connect more deeply with the local natural environment.
Kawahara Chuo Park is a great place for a relaxing stroll near the castle. Nearby, the Mitaki Valley offers a lush, natural environment. For those looking to relax, the nearby 'Yutayasou' hot spring facility provides a perfect way to enjoy the local natural-resource-rich culture.
As there are no elevators or mechanical lifts inside the facility, please be mindful when using the stairs. For visitors with mobility needs, an accessible approach path is available near the observatory entrance. We ask that all visitors respect the historical exhibits and follow local etiquette during their visit.
