Kawanakajima Kosenji Historical Park, located in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, is a historic site that preserves the legacy of the Sengoku (Warring States) period. It is famously known as the battlefield for the intense clashes between the legendary warlords Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. The park features a massive 12,000 m² lawn area designed with natural stone streams and traditional thatched-roof gazebos (azumaya), creating a peaceful atmosphere. It serves both as a historical landmark and a beloved recreational space for locals and visitors alike.
This site is one of the most significant battlefields of the Sengoku era, specifically the Hachimanpara area, where Takeda Shingen is said to have established his main camp. Adjacent to the park is Hachiman-sha Shrine, which hosts impressive bronze statues depicting the legendary one-on-one duel between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. These statues play a vital role in helping visitors visualize the intensity of the combat that once took place here. The area is carefully preserved as a precious piece of regional cultural heritage.

The Nagano City Museum is located within the park grounds, offering detailed exhibitions on local history and culture. Spring is particularly spectacular, as approximately 100 cherry blossom trees bloom, making it a popular destination for hanami (flower viewing). Please note that parking hours vary by season: from March 1 to November 30, the lot is available until 21:00; from December 1 to the end of February, it is available until 17:30.

For pet owners, there is a dedicated dog run where you can spend time with your companion. The park is also very family-friendly, featuring playground equipment for children and an outdoor stage. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the park is quite spacious and involves significant walking. While there are English signs available, we suggest researching the history in advance for a deeper experience. Most activities are free and do not require reservations, but please check official sites for special events. If using the dog run, please follow park etiquette and keep your dog on a leash. For payments at nearby facilities or parking, having both cash and a credit card is recommended.
